So the first thing I do is hook everything up. It won't power on! I open it up and wondering if the power switch is broken, I begin jumping leads with my needle-nose' to find out. No go! So I put that Antec PP-303X I just recapped on it and it fires right up! I can't find anything wrong with the original power supply. It looks perfect. It's just a little ol' Mitac X-145C. (of course I did take everything out to the garage and blow it out with my compressor, including the PSU which was filled with fur... not literal fur you taffer ^_^)
So first of all, what's a good replacement for this system without going overboard? My local place is frys.com and I don't know the brands in their 200W+ category, but they have the Antec Basiq 350 in their 300W+ category. Oh and I can use an ATX12V PSU in place of a normal ATX, correct? Just don't use the +12V connector? A suggestion for a PSU from Frys would be appreciated. It's just an office computer for e-mail, web browsing and MS Office.
I did a fresh install of XP and everything worked without any help. But just because, I installed the latest available drivers for this board from VIA as well as the latest drivers for the ESS 1989 IC for sound. Everything is just fine, EXCEPT that if I'm playing a WAV (that's what I use for listening, freshly ripped WAV's) and I go to a web page, if I drag the vertical slider up and down to browse the page, it slows down the audio slightly and starts to distort and jack up. (this happened before I updated the drivers, too) Is this just because it's a lowly ol' 533 with 256MB RAM trying to run XP or is the audio IC a serious piece of junk? At first I thought this was because the Network card was sharing the same IRQ as the audio hardware so I switched the slot and now NOTHING is sharing an IRQ, but the problem remains. (oh yeah, I installed with no ACPI) Do I need to turn down/off hardware accelleration for the audio hardware?
Whassamatta wit dis ting, eh?
