My friends HP Laptop out of nowhere stopped working, now it starts up and does Startup repair then restarts and does the same thing, sometimes it goes to a blank screen then i have to shut it down manually, even if i hit 'start windows normally' that doesnt work. What should i do to fix it? It runs Windows Vista

Sounds like a failing HDD to me (though it could be something else like RAM or files that have gotten corrupted by a virus for example)
are you able to boot to "safe mode with command prompt" at any stage so you can run chkdsk (with the /f switch) and see if it comes up with any bad sectors to eliminate/isolate whether the drive is the problem? -

It does sound like a failing drive. Download Seatools or similar & run a scan before taking the time to do the factory recovery. If it passes, then I would do as RJARRRPCGP suggested.Comment

i didnt think it was the hard drive cause last time i had a hd issue it was making clicking noises, but my friend decided to take it in and get it looked at,

Let me tell you a little bit about what happened to my laptop (MSI GF63 THIN 11UCX model: MS-16R6) that “maybe” you know how to solve this problem.
So before this problem happened, my laptop was running smoothly. When I wanted to restart my laptop, it looked fine at first. But after I waited for this restart process to take a long time, until finally I panicked (because the restart process did not finish plus the laptop screen only showed a black screen), I immediately pressed and held the power button to force the laptop to turn off.
