Hardware Failures on a Million Consumer PCs paper

It was published in April 2011 but I only found about it today:

Cycles, Cells and Platters: An Empirical Analysis
of Hardware Failures on a Million Consumer PCs

It's a very informative paper about where errors occurred in a million pcs microsoft had access to.

The only statistic that surprised me was that desktops are less reliable
    than laptops!

I guess newer desktops are being built to much lower standards than they used to be.

I have used many obsolete desktops in the past few years and all have been completely reliable.

I have seen the insides of the new Lenovo desktops that are made to resemble the the old IBM Think Centre P4s. Crap caps abound. I guess the manufacturers are looking at the desktop as an obsolete platform and are trying to kill it off!

I think they want us all on phones and tablets....and I'll pass on both for my internet appliance. Phones are great for making calls and texting, and tablets are cute gadgets for the kiddies, but otherwise useless.... The desktop won't be obsolete anytime soon.

I think the laptops vs desktops might be related to how they're actually used.

I'm not sure if they normalized the data, if it isn't I would guess the laptops in general are used less for intensive work, they throttle down the cpu when idle, there's less disk and memory access compared to regular desktops.

They found a correlation between cpu and memory errors and other factors.

They also found that OEM desktops were better than the other desktops... I would put it in the same category. Most OEM computers are probably bought by companies and used during regular schedules or they're bought by people who are less tech savvy and just use them for iTunes and so on.

I still have to read the paper more thoroughly, I just skimmed through it.

Sensor on Aurora AS1018CD paper shredder doesn't work
          by CapSnap123
I'm getting frustrated troubleshooting a paper shredder. The way the shredder normally works is when you turn the power on, nothing happens until you insert a piece of paper. There is an IR shredder in the shredder and inserting the paper breaks the beam and starts the shredder motor. But now the motor runs constantly, even when no paper is inserted. I've replaced the photodiode and the IR emitter. Also the relay makes a nice clicking sound so I assume it is working too. I don't know what else to check. Here's a photo of the circuit board. The red and black wires marked IR - go to the...

What are these components that detect paper in a fax scanner
          by waigy
          PROBLEM SOLVED
I DIDN'T REALISE MY SMALLEST SOLDERING TIP COULD JUST FIT BETWEEN THESE COMPONENTS.
I MANAGED TO REMOVE THEM WITH NO DAMAGE TO THE BOARD AND I HAVE MY INTENDED END RESULT.

On a Possio PM70 portable fax machine which has a scanner that detects when you push a piece of paper into the scanner slot.
It is these two small (3mm long) components that detect the paper and start the scanner feed motor which pulls the paper into the scanner.
(These are on the circuit board for the keypad and not the main board)

I want to disable these as...

Seeking "Ripple Current Confusion" paper by Kemet
          by Junkrepair
          Hey everybody.

Trying to understand the meaning of ripple-current specs for capacitors, I've seen references to a paper apparently entitled "Ripple Current Confusion", by Kemet. I've found that the links to the paper are broken, and that it doesn't seem to be on Kemet's site.

Can you post that paper or a good link to it?

          Thanks.

Paper Jam fix all trick of the year for 2019
          by captainKKK
Today, I am going to share one of my favorite jam fix tricks that works in nearly every printer.

Things needed to make your tool:
          1. A laminating machine (can pay to use one at office supply or package store)
          2. some plastic 8"x 11" laminating sheets (8.5 x 14" works as well)
          3. some heavy paper (or laminate multiple sheet on top of one another)

You are trying to make a fairly thick laminated 8.5 x 18" sheet. (as pictured)

I am not going to tell you the step by step of making this extended sheet as you can do...
