Are HP laptops good?

I have a question about HP's quality and workmanship these days... I have a HP TC4200 laptop/tablet thing and it seems to chuck a hissy fit every month or so. I've replaced nearly the whole thing except for motherboard and the lcd screen components.

Basically I've gone through a palm rest/touchpad, set of hinges, battery, hard drive, hard drive cover (yes I said cover cause it cracked!), a DC jack, a power supply, the fan, the stylus thing and a few other odd bits which I can't remember...
Why do I keep throwing money at it? It's a tablet PC, that's why.

I have older (and some newer) Dell laptops and various Toshiba which are trouble free... and those machines are ex-corporate units which have been abused and misused as well! IIRC I also have a Toshiba (Tecra M2) which is all externally damaged everywhere, even the screen has deep dark spots on it and it still works fine without a problem and handles like a new lappy!

So yes, I question HP reliability... is it bad or am I just unlucky?

and... before you ask, I am very careful with my laptops... they don't get thrown around or the like.

HP reliability and quality is horrible.

Then again, I'm porbably going to trade my MacBook Air in for a cheap HP laptop...
(I'll have $800 left over after doing that lol)

HP's reliability on professional/business models (i.e. ProBook) is not that bad, although I would get a Lenovo ThinkPad or Dell Latitude before an HP ProBook any day. My employer uses HP so I'm stuck with a ProBook for work, although my personal Laptop is a ThinkPad.

HP's reliability on the consumer side is absolutely horrible. Granted most consumer grade Laptops are not that good in general, HP's quality is near the bottom in this class. I would recommend virtually anything over HP on the consumer side, even Acer is generally better than HP's consumer stuff.

My experience has been the opposite. Nowadays i'd pick Dell or Asus before HP, but never Acer.

The HP Probooks are quite good. Solid build quality, and the ones i've seen have the fan vents on the side, so there's never an overheating problem due to the surface they are put on. Just be warned that the "spill-proof" keyboard - isn't.

The consumer series... stay away. Although my DV5 has been pretty trouble-free, i've heard of horror stories about those as well, and my DV9000... well you know that one already.

HP is garbage, I work at ups and we're constantly chucking abunch of HP returns to La Vergne TN.

Recently I'm getting more dead HP laptops for repair, sadly I can't do anything with them because of BGA/Chipset issues.

Agreed, I'd go with dell. Even lenovo has been slipping... a far cry from what IBM was producing.

dell is good if you're under warranty. If you're under warranty the'll suck you off and send a tech to your house the next day to fix it

if you're not under warranty you're fucked

from working in a shop for 3 years I've seen very few: Acers, Asus's, Lenovos

just saying
