    Thanks for the input

A big thank you to those of you who provided input to my recent thread about putting together a new PC.

I decided to go with this:
-AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Toledo 2000MHz HT Socket 939 Dual Core Processor
-ABIT AT8 32X Socket 939 ATI CrossFire Radeon XPRESS 3200 ATX AMD Motherboard
    -CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered Dual Channel Kit System Memory (2 sets for a total of 4GB )
    -ATI 100-437509 Radeon X1600PRO 512MB GDDR2 PCI Express x16 Video Card
-Antec LifeStyle SONATA II Piano Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 450Watt SmartPower 2.0 ATX 12V V2.0
-LG Black IDE 16X DVD±R DVD Burner With 5X DVD-RAM Write Model GSA-4167B
-Western Digital Caviar SE WD1200JBRTL 120GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive
    -Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ST3808110AS 80GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

A few other odds and ends, but thats the gist.

I've got it up and running. Now for the tuning and tweaking. I wish I would have taken some pictures, but the camera I have sucks butt on close up pics. If I can get my hands on a nice DSLR, and this one surpasses my expectations, I just might have another opportunity for pics.

Once again, I'd like to give a thanks to the input. This is my first AMD machine and so far it seems pretty cool.

why did you get one IDE hd?

looks good anyway. tell me if you hear high frequency sound from the 7200.9

if you want dslr then 350xt is a lot of camera for the money but you will end up spending lots on accessories if you get a dslr. canon A series is a good cheaper choice. i am also looking at an ixus 55 at the moment.

Thats the Rebel, yes?? I was looking at it a few months ago. I might have to break down and get it. Even regular 8MP non-DSLR cameras are upwards of $500. I'd rather spend an extra $200 and get a good one like the Rebel.

yeah the rebel xt. i have a 20D. a friend has the xt and takes awesome pics with it. they are practically the same camera just the 20d has metal body, is much larger and has more controls directly available rather than buried in menus.

the xt is more compact and that can be a benefit, i like the feel of the 20d but it looks like a pro camera and that has caused problems for me with marina security a few times. unfortunately they recently released the 30d which has larger screen and spot metering which i could use.

i think they will give the xt the same treatment next.

the DSLR scene is different though, some people buy a DSLR and then they just cant make it work. the program setting is just not satisfactory like on the idiot cams. you really have to learn aperture and exposure......and occasionally it backfires on you something terrible heh......but with the 8 megapixel and the digic ii processor (which they are using in the small cams also) when it works out it is awesome.

the most important thing though is to have good glass. which is why i suggest to start out with the xt and get better glass.

        i have :

Tamron 28-75 2.8 XR Di - this is a very popular "walk around" lens, it is very sharp and good priced ($349) its just not very wide. i was happy with just that for about a year.

Canon 100 2.8 usm macro - this is a very sharp macro ($450) the autofocus is quite awful sometimes hunting around like a dickhead until you get it to lock on. i do most shots for badcaps with this. i should have got something shorter though. it is quite long for a lot of review shots. a great portrait lens though.

Canon Flash 580ex - ($360) this brings indoor photos to another level. its just awesome what an external flash will do. There is also the new 430ex ($230) which would be fine, its just not going to work as a master flash. i will get one next time to be slave for my 580ex.

for a beginners kit i would recommend

rebel xt with canon 17-85mm ef-s lens - $1070 (this is a much better lens than the 18-55 but adds $390 to the price)
        430ex flash - $230
        bag
        tripod
sandisk 1gb ultra ii (the extreme iii offer no performance gain) - $60

if you want filters to protect the lenses i would recommend hoya super hmc pro 1 uv filters they are extremely thin and awesome.

other stuff to look at :

Canon 50mm 1.8 ii - ($80) this is a very cheap but sharp lens. 50mm is very popular for photography, its just not so useful on a small sensor, 50x1.6=80mm (film equivalent) i am looking in others in that sector presently.

Canon 17-40 f4 L ($630) i want to try one of these, a popular lens.

Canon 70-200 f4 L ($545) an awesome zoom for the money just no image stabilisation

camera equipment is crazy, possible to get really confused.

        need to read some

        http://www.dpreview.com/
        http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/index.php
        http://www.dslreports.com/forum/dphardware

best to start off with the basics, whether a 17-85 or a tamron 28-75 (probably a better lens, a good choice but then you will later maybe need a wide, whether tamron, tokina or canon). or a 17-40 and live with that for some months then choose each next lens one at a time.

oh yeah another thing with DSLRs which i am currently suffering....sensor dust. i will order a cleaning kit soon.

            <cough>

            photography is an expensive hobby

I love the cameras, but I hate the price. I wouldn't use it often enough to justify it. I have this cheap Kodak DC210+ and I rarely use it. But then again....I have a lot of expensive (and not so expensive) things laying around that I don't use much.

That is a nice setup in that bag. Looks like it might be fun lugging that around all day. I had an uncle that was into photography. This was 20 some years ago, but I can remember times when he would have two or three different SLR cameras around his neck. He loved it though. He had tons of pictures. No idea where they are anymore.

                    Re: Thanks for the input

                    Hi Mike,

If you happen to be, at any point in the future, starting out with a digital SLR, don't forget Nikon. I guess the fact that I use a fantastically-sharp Nikon microscope at work, coupled with the fact that I added a D70s to our photography "kit" a few months ago biases my view somewhat.

After all, and as Will doubtless will agree, it's very difficult not to develop brand loyalty when one has acquired a few (or more) expensive Nikkor (or Canon-brand) lenses. You'll soon find yourself accrediting whatever camera/lenses you happen to own with intangible qualities such as "It feels more solid/sturdy/professional/better quality in general, etc."

It's a little like Makita vs Bosch when dealing with power drills. (I'm a Makita 'fanboy' myself)

In any case, the Nikon D70s body (with basic bits-and-bobs) should be available for no more than $800. After that, well - Nikkor-brand lenses alone range from $99 to thousands of dollars.

                    ...

Went today with the wife and kids to the annual, 20000-people strong, "Elf fantasy fair" - the ultimate photo opportunity - (heck, I took over a gigabyte of shots myself). Alas, It wasn't too long before I crossed a guy carrying a $4500 Nikon D2x - almost made me want to ask him for an autograph.

I like your statement that will quoted and his reaction.

I'm going to look into it more seriously after I get back from school in August. I'm going to be fairly preoccupied with schools from now until then. Then things settle down.

I have to say I'm a Makita fan myself. Back when I was stationed in Memphis, we got a new tactical search radar from an Italian manufacturer and they had a couple cordless drills in the tool kit. Funny....they got used a lot, but not on the radar.
