    Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz

Paired with 2GB DDR2, how does this stack up against other processors?
Is it better than PIII? Better than Pentium 4? Better than Pentium-M (I'm doubting this)...

    Re: Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz

beats PIII and lower end P4

pentium m, on a clock per clock, the pentium m would win.

in a performance/watt test, the atom would win.

I used to push those... lubuntu isn't a bad choice...

i hate so called "netbook OS's", such as UNR (or ubuntu 11.04+), easy peasy, or the like.

you can even run gnome-shell on those...

whatever floats your boat i guess.

        2.5W TDP! That's cool!

Thanks for the info guys, it kinda makes sense given the so-so performance I was experiencing...

Pity it's in an HP product (not too bad surprisingly)

at least its not an EEE... those are the ultimate in shoveling features but skimping on quality... the HP netbooks aren't too awful bad, as far as netboooks go.

heey.. my eeePC held up pretty well so far.. including all the mods i did to it :P

Sure.. an Atom N280 isn't really powerful, but go ahead and try to find a sub-12" laptop with 8+ hours runtime on batteries

maybe the ones not designed for best buy sale were better... the batter life is nice, especially if you grab one of the aftermarket 12 cell batteries (for the 1000_ series).

Well, besides the hinge design on the 900-series, I disagree than the eeePC's are crap. In fact, they're pretty sturdy and robust, especially for the price.
Remember, you're trying to compare a $200 netbook to a better computer that costs lots of money (Your favorite Dell (D600?) cost a lot more new than an eeePC)...

                  Re: Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz

I'm getting the 8+ hours with the standard battery that came with it (PL32-1005 10.8V 5800mAh 63Wh 6 cell)

                  My eeePC is a 1005HA-H
                  Specs: http://skinflint.co.uk/435413

The only 2 things i hate about it are the glossy case (the whole display half and where the touchpad is) and the glossy screen.. but then again.. I only paid 80eur (roughly 100usd) 1 1/2 years back because the seller had no clue what it was worth
(It's one of the best models in the 1005HA line .. N280, Bluetooth, 1.3mp cam, largest battery, etc.)

I've added a UMTS (3G?) USB stick internally, as well as a GPS receiver (needs an external antenna though.. no place to put it) and upgraded the RAM to 2GB DDR2-667

@shovenose: I'm actually a fan of these older 900 and 1000 series eee's.. mainly because they're WAY more modding friendly (multiplie miniPCIe slots, more room in the casing, ..) and because none of them have any of the bullshit piano gloss finish... unlike mine (fingerprint magnet) >.>

edit: PS: the cute little N280 overclocks up to 2GHz ... i know it's pointless but.. yeah

you need to know what clock generator chip is on your board though..
Still doesn't help much performance wise. I wish intel would have used a different chipset like the GL40 or something.. the stone age i945 is just too crippled to do anything.
With a newer chipset, you could have gotten hardware video acceleration and a somewhat more powerful IGP ...

oh well.. that's what ION(2) and nowadays AMD's APUs (CPU+GPU on one chip) are for
