That's probably same model as the one I'm trying to fix. The Sony is exactly the same monitor, though, so I know what you're talking about

What resolution are you running on yours? I wanted to try 1680x1050, but couldn't because the drivers for my video card didn't offer it (nor any other 16:10 resolutions, except for the 1920x1200 prime mode, which is more than fine with me).
WTF! I always thought a few mm is bad, but that's just insane.
On the contrary, my 17" Dell D1025HTX still has quite an amazing picture, and that thing was built in 1997! Not sure how much it's been used, though - I got it from Craigslist in early 2007. Still...
Changing between light and dark screens affects neither the screen size nor the contrast. And with a full black image on the screen, you almost cannot tell it's turned on, even at night.
Gotta love them Sony's.
