    Spam Mails

did anyone else notice a great increase in Spam which gets past your spam filters?

i am going to have to modify spamassasin config again, it is just ridiculous at the moment. stuff like this is getting past :

Peni$ Enlarge P@tch is all what you need for a perfect l1fe.

here are some tips for people which i am going to implement myself, learnt from my personal and work experience. First of all do not put your valid email address in forums or on yours or any website, guestbook, list whatever.

if you want to post it in forums etc then use yourname [ at ] yourisp.com
the reason is that the spammers spider the net like google and collect the email addresses. if they are not valid email addresses like the example above then they wont get spidered.

if you want to have your email address on your site, you can have a form for people to communicate with you by. Personally i dont like that way if you are running a business, i like that clients can get your email address somehow and add it to their databases. that is all personal preference. you can have it both ways by getting a script from http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamici...lscrambler.htm
which uses javascript so when the visitor clicks on your email address which is recorded as yourname[at]yourcompany.com on your page, the javascript puts the @ in the right place.

subscribing to stuff on the net and obtaining services requires you to have a valid email address. some services are bonafide, others you might use only once and they sell your address to spammers.

the best thing to do is to get a .com or whatever hosted solution with mail service and webmail access to your accounts. you can find these at reasonable price with a good host, but be careful to get a good host which is recommended, some of the offers are cheap but the service is crap. you can get also spamassassin or similar service at the host and it is interesting to configure it to your own requirements.

then you can put many email addresses @yourdotcom.com
and you can filter through your email software messages for each account into different folders.

it is not recommended to have the usual types of addresses like webmaster@yourdotcom.com, sales@ , contact@, support@ etc cost the spammers record in their databases the new .com's which are registered and then start to spam those addresses to see if they dont get returned.

it is best to get a .com early cos otherwise you might want to kill your old email account and you have to sift through it and correct the registrations you have and notify people etc, can be a pain.

actually i have to do a lot of that to kill my old isp account and also to kill the 2 accounts i had on my websites.

so you make several accounts, for instance you might have regs@yourdotcom.com and that is for your important bonafide registrations. you could also have spamme2006@yourdotcom.com which is for the stuff you need a valid address to register for temporarily. and then you filter the mail into different mailboxes - you get the idea.

the only email address i dont get spam on at the moment is my badcaps moderator one. thanks TC.

i think email is going to get more and more tricky as time goes on. sometimes it is a PITA to get some bonafide company mail past a company's spamassasin config. GREAT when they send you a no delivery report 1 hour later or whatever to some urgent email.

advanced email hosted solutions is an interesting market, something better than typically offered by hosts with a good webmail interface, configurable antivirus and configurable message flagging. nice webmail instead of the usual default configured squirrel mail, horde, neomail etc.....how about IMAP and webmail so that several users in a small company can man one email address and see what has been read and dealt with. even more like hosted helpdesk solutions but slanted towards sales so they can see the status of each enquiry, who is dealing with it and what did they do etc...

Business Idea? I think there are a lot of small businesses that could benefit from hosted solutions like that. including contact databases like plaxo into the package (which i see is becoming more popular with small businesses) and other services would make it a great solution. with faster DSL connections hosted solutions are the way to go for the small business. no need to maintain so much hardware and servers in the office. good technical support is a big problem for small businesses and onsite visits costly.

anyway...i rant....but perhaps something nice to discuss?

Would posting your address as username (AT) host (DOT) com also work?

        Re: Spam Mails

I dont really get that much spam, considering the main account I use is adm in at youknowwhere....... Anything viral is immediately bounced, and the garbage always seems to end up in the spam box. once in a while, something slips through, no anti-spam system is 100% fool proof, but considering how hard otehrs seem to be spammed, I consider myself lucky. The biggest key to not getting spammed, is to not post your email address anywhere online where bots can pick it up.
