my stock intel northwood cooler is making bad noises occasionally so i decided to get another hsf. i looked at the big tower ones in the store and thought i would need to check for clearances etc so i got this one for 25 euro

the fan is 70mm which is not great. 80mm would have been perfect for finding replacements. can find a 70-80mm adaptor though. the fan is speed adjustable which is nice.

the kit contains the hsf+clip, a retention bracket for 754/940, a pci slot and floppy bay (whichever you choose to hold the speed adjust pot), a case badge and screws.

actually i read the instructions to remove my p4 retention bracket from the board and then after i did that and looked at the retention bracket included i though no way is this correct. after an internet search, the included bracket is not for P4!! the stock bracket on the board should be used instead...oh thanks..

the heatsink is all copper with fins. it is not that large and is a midrange product not something extreme. the fins could be easily blocked with dust so this requires attention periodically. they are very thin and easily manipulated if transit has pushed some out of alignment. the heatsink has already thermal compound on it. it is not a solid pad and easily disturbed.

here is the speed adjust pot attached to the pci bracket. i will use it this way. at full speed the fan is moving a lot of air and is reasonably loud but not offensive sounding. it is high pitched though and a quarter turn of the pot makes it just right.

There's three yellow Fujitsu's on the video card, and (at least) three on the motherboard. They don't look bulged to me, but we'll see what Will has to say about them.

looking at the photo, the video card is ok. the mobo i definitely checked when i opened the case. the only thing wrong is that it wasnt the cpu fan, it was the video card fan. now i have to find a suitable hsf to replace.

that mobo is still highly recommended if anyone is looking for replacement s478 on ebay. it is an intel D875PBZLK. recommended to get higher than revision 206 to get vdimm adjust though.

willawake; Have a look at the Zalman VF700Cu or Au (copper vs aluminum) or the "Fatality" version (improved VF700Cu with LED fan...)

It undervolts very nicley and at 5v it is very quiet... And still at 5v it cools better than the stock fan on my ATI X800XL...

yes the zalman has good reviews. i like copper fin heatsinks, i cannot understand how they manufacture them though, looks expensive to do.

unfortunately i have not seen the zalman available here. there is arctic silencer though.

i am thinking about making something perhaps. i will see what i can find.
