it looks like it is not flat on the heatsink but it is. actually it is necessary to be very careful with the tension of the cable ties because you can tilt the heatsink off the gpu, it is only attached with 2 spring pegs. so the configuaration as you see was the best compromise. thats a 60mm fan with one screw attached to the heatsink, a 50mm might fit perfectly with all 4 screws.

some more video card cooling. this one was quite funny because i shut down one of my folding boxes to put a 42 ohm resistor on the psu fan wire. it wasnt making any offensive noise just giving the fan 12v all the time so a bit too much air sound. of course when i started it up the graphics card fan gave out (murphy's law) and started making a terrible sound.

so i needed a cheap but reliable fan replacement for an msi fx5200-tdr128

        the stock fan on the left is a sunon 12vdc 1.3w 124010vh 5.9cfm 33dBA. I found a KDE1204PKS2 which i recognise from 1u rack switches etc. It is 40x20cm 0.9w 12vdc 7.7CFM and quiet 21dBA.

so here is all the stuff, the fans, some wood screws and the card.

        assembled. seems to work fine.

msi fx5600 done with the same type of sunon fan as above. these are fine, cheap and reliable.

this is the case that houses my P4.

By the front panel, it looks similar to my Ultra Aluminus. It is a really nice case. One of endless Chenming-built, good-quality clones.

Why I don't buy cheap cases!

well antec used to have them but looks like no more. chieftec still supplies them.

there is a few available here

                    http://www.atxcases.com/atx-cases.asp

although they are rock solid cases, i would buy something else because dual 120mm fans is the way to go for nice cooling and quiet. and those are all 80mm i believe

Re: HSF Cooler Master Vortex Dream ACC-U72

ok, 120 fan is good, but 4x 80mm input and some o/p all @5v can make similar airflow too, and that with probably less noise than with an 120mm fan.
My cheapo case features holes for both, 4x 80mm or 1x 120m (as input).
I decided to use 4x AC fan 1,72€ each for.
I shorted the thermal control NTC and put them on a 5v cable.
I don`t hear them, but airflow is nice so far.
My appreoach for siletn systems is now more fans at lower speed.

Lately i tried some Papst 80mm fans, i bought for a friend, but they had a very very ugly noise, is like the bearing was brocken or the blades where unbalanced.
I hope this is a production failure, may be i will try to get some others.
If the other Papst are equaly loud, than i will give up abouth them.

some papst do have a not smooth noise. but there are many different ones. i will order some NMB when i get around to it.

i have some AC fans in the server cabinet. they start up exactly like a turbine sound.

The not tolerable Papst is an 8412 N/2GMLE made in Hungary.

His low poer cousine with stated 9db is atm in my friends rig, as i want to keep the HDD cool and the noise was not that loud (as the blades are running at lower rpm...).
But shure it is suffering the same problem.
It is not good, if an 1,75€ AC Fan Pro TC is featuring a better noise flavour than an 8,95€ Papst. May be the Papst has better endurance, but i would change the AC fan imediately if it would make same crappy noise.
