Re: Intel 2.0 GHz processor running at about 200Mhz? Help
i have downloaded CPU-Z and used it on my system.
the processor speed fluctuates between 1999MHz to 2002MHz
The FSB speed fluctuates between 404MHz to 200MHz
I have also attached the report CPU-Z generated, check if you can find any errors.
besides if this indicate the processor is working fine, might it be a driver issue because i just formated the laptop?
if its driver issue, from the zipped text report i attach can you point me to the right drivers?
i initially downloaded drivers from samsungpc.com, but the scenario lingersAttached FilesComment

Re: Intel 2.0 GHz processor running at about 200Mhz? Help
Gotta be a bug in CPU-Z with the 404MHz thing. The FSB is 200MHz, what it's supposed to be. Nothing funky in the report. Grab this piece of software. If the red throttle indicator fluctuates, then there's something wrong with the cooling.Originally posted by PeteS in CARemember that by the time consequences of a short-sighted decision are experienced, the idiot who made the bad decision may have already been promoted or moved on to a better job at another company.Comment

Re: Intel 2.0 GHz processor running at about 200Mhz? Help
The P4 only had a 400Mhz FSB in the abstract:
Notable with the introduction of the Pentium 4 was the 400 MHz FSB. It actually operated at 100 MHz but the FSB was quad-pumped, meaning that the maximum transfer rate was four times the base clock of the bus, so it was considered to run at 400 MHz.
Why the *actual* cpu speed is not going down, that's a good question. But the FSB fluctuation is pretty indicative."We have offered them (the Arabs) a sensible way for so many years. But no, they wanted to fight. Fine! We gave them technology, the latest, the kind even Vietnam didn't have. They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Once again they scrammed [sic]. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, 'Save me!' He demanded to send Soviet troops, and immediately! No! We are not going to fight for them."

there isn;t any red indicator, instead it green CPU load indicator and graph. is this what you where referring toLast edited by coolcurrent; 12-14-2010, 11:23 AM.Comment

Re: Intel 2.0 GHz processor running at about 200Mhz? Help
@ mockingbird: CPU-Z shows both "real" (clock rate) and "rated" (data transfer speed) FSB.
@ coolcurrent: That's strange if the throttling indicator doesn't show. It means throttling is either custom managed or disabled entirely (in which case it should have crashed, which it doesn't). Try temperature reporting programs such as Everest (go under Computer->Sensor) or SpeedFan, i recall that's what i was using when i had a P4. Any temps past 60C are signs of worry, Northwood processors start throttling at 63C.Originally posted by PeteS in CARemember that by the time consequences of a short-sighted decision are experienced, the idiot who made the bad decision may have already been promoted or moved on to a better job at another company.Comment

Re: Intel 2.0 GHz processor running at about 200Mhz? Help
You mean to say that CPU-Z *should* show real clock rate. But it's not. Wouldn't FSB fluctuation indeed indicate throttling? Doesn't CPUz only rely on ACPI tables to record information? Who says Samsung's bios isn't fooling it?"We have offered them (the Arabs) a sensible way for so many years. But no, they wanted to fight. Fine! i just confirm that this system does not have any internal temperature monitoring device, except for that of the harddriveComment

Re: Intel 2.0 GHz processor running at about 200Mhz? Help
It does have temperature sensors, they have to control it somehow. But they're not exposed to the user, shame on them.
Buy a multimeter with a temperature probe, it should only set you back $15 and you'll find plenty of use for it. Stick the temperature probe into the heatsink and try to make it reach the center. See what you get.Originally posted by PeteS in CARemember that by the time consequences of a short-sighted decision are experienced, the idiot who made the bad decision may have already been promoted or moved on to a better job at another company.Comment

Re: Intel 2.0 GHz processor running at about 200Mhz? Help
Temperature is always available via the ACPI table. You just need a utility to access it. In Linux you would find it under /proc/acpi, you would just issue cat /proc/acpi/cpu or something like that, after setting up lm_sensors.
In Windows, there's an old utility called "Motherboard Monitor" that might work."We have offered them (the Arabs) a sensible way for so many years. But no, they wanted to fight. Fine! Re: Intel 2.0 GHz processor running at about 200Mhz? Help
You have two seperate issues.
I know, because I also have a Toshiba laptop with the Phoenix bios.
Firstly, you need to fix your DSDT table. See my instructions here at the Ubuntu forums:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...036051&page=52
Skip to step 8, if you get the problem that I describe at the beginning of the post, then start over at step 1.
The other problem I found after recompiling my DSDT table was that I was still not getting thermal_zone and throttling registering in /acpi. But I have heard that this can be caused by two things. Firstly, using x64 Ubuntu, secondly, having "thermal" compiled as a module.
I am going to try to recompile the kernel, this time with "thermal" in it, and I'll see if that fixes it, otherwise, I'll see if the i386 version does anything. If not, then it's Toshiba's problem and I will never touch their laptops again.
If you have troubles fixing your dsdt table, then post the file, I will give it a go. But don't forget that you'll still have to recompile your kernel to use a custom DSDT.Last edited by mockingbird; 12-27-2010, 02:52 PM."We have offered them (the Arabs) a sensible way for so many years.
