Check out the temperature rating on some of the smaller caps - cause for concern?

From the 945 series: But it is disturbing to see that some are only rated at 85 degrees C. Especially since some are sitting next to the big honkers near the VRMs rated at 105 (good). One can only hope that there is not much heat transference (yeah – right).

Is Intel schizophrenic! They are torn between commitment to quality (Oscons) and trying to save a buck using 85 degree caps.

well spotted! 85oC caps, very strange indeed. I see them also on Anandtech review model

      http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets...spx?i=2681&p=1

what are the blocks near the oscons?

on the anandtech board they are angled unlike the early photos from intel which suggest there was some revision before release. They are also blue not black.

i wonder how hot the fet heatsinks will get. there are a few caps right near them

        Re: Intel 975

        Asked the same question myself.

Looking carefully at exploded picture, they appear to be choke coils.

They are encased coils..similar to the R60's used on the DFI lanparty boards

great! thanks. they must be the quietest type perhaps.

we are seeing less of these noisy things

and more of these also instead.

That's cool area of the board.
Intel used that "covered coils" on older boards too.

No such luck on this 845.

I am informed that the 85 degree caps are on the Intel 915 series also.

Looks like full house for Sanyos around the 975 processor area.

                Now that's cooel

VR is a Nichicon general purpose series;VP is bipolar, "for entertainment electronics" (quote from catalog). Should be OK for non-stressful use (low-moderate ripple current, low-moderate temp).

Power Supplies should be boring: No loud noises, no bright flashes, and no bad smells.

I like them, they also speed up manufacturing, since you can load up a chips hooter with them, coils on the otherhand are a no go, hand job (and not the fun kind)

Ever see a chip shooter in action... I love them, like a machine gun loaded with electrical components...
