Okay, EVEN MORE drama. The DVD unit in question failed to recognize a DVD. Region 3 does not matter -- the Win7 file manager should still be able to recognize VIDEO_TS folder. (Sometimes the AUDIO_TS folder is omitted from store-bought DVDs). I replaced this with a new in box eBay burner I bought about 60 days ago (LiteOn iHas424), it recognizes the disc perfectly. I'll set the questionable unit aside and label it as questionable, and use the eBay burner going forward.

EDIT: I am so sorry that many of my projects are so slow to get finally resolved. And thus far, it is only this one DVD that is affected. But if I have more burners that are "perfect", I'll "use them up" first.

(The disc is "1987: When the Day Comes, disc 2"). If you get the chance, I do recommend this movie. A student dies during police torture, and various people -- students, monks, shopkeepers, prison guards -- help to expose the police who did the torturing. This led to 6 months of rioting in the streets, and REGIME CHANGE. It seems to closely follow historical events. If South Korea had not become a democracy during this time, their "economic miracle" might not have happened.)
