    Bust Lappy Keyboard

OK its a Dell C640. I was removing the keyboard to reinstall the CMOS battery. I popped the key with the windows logo on it off the keyboard. All four little tangs are still intact. Just how do I put it back on the keyboard? Its just another dumb moment for me!

They generally just pop back on, unless you've pulled everything off the board, in which case it's harder to do. I've got a whole box of them at work, so if I screw up the little metal tabs on the board itself, I generally just chuck the keyboard and throw a new one on.

i have had varying stages of success. if the little lever things are intact, you have to stick one in, then lay the key down and press the other one in. the delete key on my hp laptop i no longer have came off, and i never figured out how to put it bck on. but the esc key on the same laptop was a cinch to put back on...
then again ibm didnt even put windows keys on their laptops for a period of time-so theoretically you dont need it

Unless like me, you rely on keyboard shortcuts. No Windows key, or it's in the wrong place, no sale.

Don't fret. I had popped off the keycaps on many notebooks.

Make sure the rubber dome is still there and look carefully at the key cap you will see 4 claws in pairs and carefully place this on the little nubs and press firmly down. You should hear clicks.

                Cheers, Wizard

Hi, I have a Notebook that have a keyboard problem.
                  Some principal keys not corresponding.
                  Example:

key Esc on keyboard -- > is a space
key Space on keyboard -- >is Enter
key up arrow on keyboard --> is a down arrow

I change the keyboard and the problem is the same.

With a USB keyboard all keys work fine.

It can be keyboard Matrix circuit problem...

                  Asus STRIX GL703GE keyboard issue
                  by macbook1967
I need help in troubleshooting an Asus STRIX GL703GE. This laptop has no working keyboard and keyboard lights. Device Manager does not show any keyboard at all (it shows a USB keyboard if connected, but not built in). The touchpad and ON/OFF button are ok. I checked keyboard circuitry on a motherboard, and everything seems to be good except there is no KBL_EN signal on pin #64 of IT8296E120A Keyboard Controller (U23, +3V_S5 is present). Pin #63 LED_PWR#_KB has 3.6V. Pin #1 on KCN1 KB CONN has 5.1V, pins #7-30 have 2.5V. G524 Power Distribution Switch (U24) is not shorted: pin #5 - 5v, pin #4 -...

Asus RoG Strix GL553V - Keyboard Dead
                  by SimsonS53
                  Good day,
it just so happen that I got my hands on a Asus RoG Strix (GL553VD ~2017),
in absolute mint condition. But with a "dead" keyboard.

I checked all the obvious stuff:
Condition of the connectors, there is absolute ne evidence of liquid damage or mechanical stress. As mentioned, absolute mint condition, as it was actually never used.

All keys have no function at all, and doesn't work in the UEFI.
                  So I don't think it's an software/driver related issue.
I also set the UEFI to defaults to verify it's no software issue.

                  Laptop external keyboard?
                  by Hondaman
Can I use an external keyboard with a modern (as of this post) laptop from, say, Dell?

I am worried about durability because I am a cheap, frugal person. I suspect an external keyboard would extend the life of the laptop. I have always been a desktop person, since my AMD 386DX-40, and I really don't know about laptops (though the current Dell products look like they are fanless, which eliminates a big failure point).

(Also I prefer the "clicking" "Unicomp" keyboard, which is still made an hour or two away from me in Lexington KY, using the same equipment...

Broken power button (keyboard). How to jump start notebook?
                  by Till
                  Hi

Yesterday while browsing the internet with my laptop I noticed that 3 keyboard buttons were not working anymore.

Today, the notebook doesn't boot anymore. My assumption is that the keyboard went bad because the power button is on the keyboard.

Is there a way to jump start directly from the motherboard?

I tried to short all the pins of the connector for the keyboard cable with no luck.

I found the schematics here on badcaps, but I didn't find the pin out for the keyboard. But truth be told, I am just a hobbyist who tries...
