Re: The 2023 Operating System Thread

Dual boot WinXP(x86)/Win7(x64) on Lenovo M82 tower systems (I have 2).

I use the XP partition mostly for "old" games and 16-bit relics; 7 for everything else (although I did manage to drag out XP for everything until the mid-2010s).

XP was probably M$'s best overall OS, with 7 being a close second. XP could still be viable in 2023 with proper/continued support, but alas......

Win2k was hands-down their best. Cleanest interface, best overall embedded hardware support at the time, and zero nannyware/spyware/activation/horseshit.

I like XP better, just for the UI updates.

Same. I actually ran 2K for a couple years during the early 2000s, with the mindset that XP was just the same OS (more or less) with more bloat.

But after playing around with XP and quickly learning that you could turn off (or curtail) much of the bloat, I ditched 2K and never looked back, because, let's face it, lots of system-level stuff that's easy to do in XP was a real pain in 2K.

I'd agree with all the XP love except for the 'activation'....that was the first hook they sunk into users; the OS phoning home. That negates its conveniences for the 'best version of windows' prize.

FWIW, corporate editions did not do this....and I actually had a legit corp key...

Re: The 2023 Operating System Thread

Normally (99%+) I use Windows 7. But I think I still have Mint 18.3 KDE on my main system as a dual-boot option.

Interesting, I did use Mint to delete a file from my Windows 7 partition recently. I must have had a weird combination of characters that Windows couldn't delete for some reason. It was something like "18c(509[3]) L Ron Hubbard Removing Space Cooties" or some crap. (L. Ron Hubbard had "diarrhea of the mouth".)

Well first off, Nappy New Year to everyone!

So what's going on?! - How come we don't have an OS thread for this year? Did everyone just move to using phones? Windows 11 killed everything? Or perhaps now that some of us have the Covid vaccines, I guess M$ is already running in our bodies so we don't really need computers anymore, right? (OK, I probably better not open that can of worms here. )

Anyways, ya'll know the drill: vote what OS you're running on your "main" PC.

I know that might be tricky for all of...
