What are the best caps for AC coupling a video signal?

    Hello.

I'm currently using 6.3V 330uF Panasonic FC capacitors for AC coupling a 75 ohm impedance video signal coming from a THS7374. They work fine, but I like to improve my designs so I'm considering using better ones.

I wonder if polymer capacitors would be better for my application. If so, I'd like to know what parameters I should look for to make a good choice.

    "Improve" ?

Left out too many details to make heads or tails of your query.

Normally large electrolytics are used to decouple. The way I read your query you either overdesigned or made a serious design error...

    Schematic would be good.

your blocking DC while allowing as much AC signal as possible,
so as long as the cap has the bandwidth, the lower the esr the less losses you will incure.
having said that, video signals dont have to travel far so minor losses arent important.

Thank you. My reason to replace aluminum electrolytics with polymers is reliability, endurance and lower ESR.

My circuit uses the example in the THS7374 datasheet for AC coupled output (page 25): https://cdn.badcaps-static.com/pdfs/...7cc648ca74.pdf (330uF capacitors polarity is wrong in this schematic).

Polymer capacitors are used not for signal coupling because they have high dielectric absorption and non-linear behavior.
You will find your video is distorted because of the polymer capacitors. This is also the case in audio use of polymer caps for blocking and AC signal coupling.

Thank you for the information. Then I'll continue using Panasonic FC.

Seasonic B12 BC-550 – barely 2 years old and with BAD CAPS already!

I know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.

For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

HannStar Hanns-G HC194d LCD monitor repair

Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

              Anthem MRX500 - no sound

              Dear Electronics Experts:

I have the following problem I am trying to troubleshoot. Unfortunately, I have contacted Anthem themselves and even a local distributer but I am not having much luck. Also, I have scoured the internet and unable to obtain a service manual. The Anthem service rep has also replied that he is unable to provide me with any service documentation. I have performed numerous searches on the internet and cross-referenced a few other AV receiver makers (Denon, Marantz, Onkyo) and found certain similarities to block diagram...

              Heathkit IO-4205 Power Supply Caps
              by eryjus
              Hello,

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."
