Ill go ahead and skip the details of how I managed to discover the busted cap, and get to the nitty gritty. I have a e-geForce 8600 GTS (not that i know what any of that means, who knows, maybe itll help me find some answers) and when I opened my PC up and looked at the card it seems to have a busted cap. the cap seems to have almost "popped" as in.. the top of the cap is pushed open slightly and there is some fibery stuff comming out of it. I figured that this was the cause for my distress. the top of the cap has some numbers on it hopefully they will help me get some answers. The numbers are as follows: "FZ77 450 16V". I figured that 16v means 16 volts but the other two numbers are lost on me... its also a relitivly small cap (i think?) any help is greatly appreciated. Ill try and take some pictures too to help with diagnosing my problem

Re: Busted Cap on my Video card help please!
those are Sacon FZ series. pure junk.
should be 450uF (? .. odd value IMO) 16V.
if you're going to replace them, replace ALL of those FZ junk caps. the other ones will be failing soon..
lots of them blew up like you described it..

Re: Busted Cap on my Video card help please!
Maine, USA? There are lots of online stores that sell electronic components that are American.
I advise you to go to www.digikey.com
I would recommend a Panasonic FM series 470uf 16V 8x15mm capacitor for replacing your defection Sacon capacitors. Panasonic FM capacitors are very low ESR (40% to 70% lower ESR than the popular low ESR Panasonic FC series capacitors). You can order them at Digikey USA here: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/Dk...name=P12376-ND
I have ordered a few times from Digikey (the Canadian website) before, and my orders have come in a good amount of time (1 to 2 weeks for me) and all my electronic components in the package that I ordered arrived fresh and non-defective, packaged in a very professional way.My gaming PC:
AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition 3.3GHz Six-Core CPU (Socket AM3)
ASUS M4A77TD AMD 770 AM3 Motherboard
PowerColor AMD Radeon RX 480 8GB GDDR5 PCI-Express x16 3.0 Graphics Card
G.SKILL Value Series 16GB DDR3-1333 RAM (4x4GB dual channel)
TOSHIBA DT01ACA200 2TB 3.5" SATA HDD (x2)
WD Caviar Green WD20EARX 2TB 3.5" SATA HDD

I believe his original cap is 8x12mm, a 3mm increase in height with a 470uf 16V Panasonic FM 8x15mm capacitor shouldn't interfere with the placement of PCI cards on his motherboard.
Don't use a video card with a failed capacitor for a long period of time, it is likely already unstable and running that any longer can result in permanent damage to the video card.My gaming PC:

Re: Busted Cap on my Video card help please!
Replace all SACON FZ series capacitors on your video card, the remaining SACON FZ capacitors can fail very soon. SACON capacitors are used on many video cards, and they have often failed to last long for many people.
For the 1500uf 6.3V replacement capacitor, I would also recommend another capacitor from the Panasonic FM series capacitor line. A Panasonic FM series 1500uf 6.3V capacitor comes in one size, 10x20mm, and this may be slightly larger than you want. The original SACON FZ 1500uf 6.3V capacitor is 10x12.5mm, so the taller Panasonic FM series 1500uf 6.3V capacitor may interfere with other cards placed in your PCI expansion slots on your motherboard. The Panasonic FM series capacitors will offer increased reliability on your video card.
Here is comparison of SACON FZ capacitor with Panasonic FM capacitor:
SACON FZ 470uf 16V:
Capacitance: 470uf
Voltage: 16V
Dimensions: 8x12mm
Ripple Current 100KHz 105c (mA rms): 1150
Impedance 100KHz 20c max: 0.036
Life: 2000 hours
Panasonic FM 470uf 16V:
Capacitance: 470uf
Voltage: 16V
Dimensions: 8x15mm
Ripple Current 100KHz 105c (mA rms): 1240
Impedance 100KHz 20c max: 0.041
Life: 3000 hours
Digikey link: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/Dk...name=P12376-ND
----------------
SACON FZ 1500uf 6.3V:
Capacitance: 1500uf
Voltage: 6.3V
Dimensions: 10x12.5mm
Ripple Current 100KHz 105c (mA rms): 1800
Impedance 100KHz 20c max: 0.022
Life: 2000 hours
Panasonic FM 1500uf 6.3V:
Capacitance: 1500uf
Voltage: 6.3V
Dimensions: 10x20mm
Ripple Current 100KHz 105c (mA rms): 2180
Impedance 100KHz 20c max: 0.019
Life: 5000 hours
Digikey link: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/Dk...name=P12343-ND
Judging from my comparison, the Panasonic FM series capacitors would be the perfect replacement when compared to the SACON FZ series capacitors. Clearly, the Panasonic FM series capacitors offer increased life over the inferior SACON FZ series capacitors.Last edited by Newbie2; 10-10-2008, 03:22 PM.My gaming PC:

Re: Busted Cap on my Video card help please!
I agree with what Newbie2 has told you.
If the height is a problem on the 1500uF then look on ebay for either Rubycon MBZ or Panasonic FJ which both have low profile versions (~12.5mm height) in 1500uF 10mm diameter.
You can get MBZ right here from badcaps.net but I'm not sure if he has low profile or not.Mann-Made Global Warming.

Re: Busted Cap on my Video card help please!
Topcat has 10x13mm Rubycon MCZ 1500uf 6.3V low ESR capacitors and 8x12.5mm Rubycon MBZ 470uf 16V low ESR capacitors for sale on his website. I got that information here: https://www.badcaps.net/pages.php?vid=22
If you want to order from Badcaps.net, first, on this homepage (www.badcaps.net) click on "Request kit" on the left side of his website (Request Kit page here: https://www.badcaps.net/pages.php?vid=23). Then, put your name and e-mail address into the boxes provided, along with make and model of motherboard you have. In the "Select Capacitor Grade" selection box, choose "Premium Grade (Rubycon)". On the "Select Your Kit" selection box, go all the way down until you see "Custom Kit" and select that option. Below, specify the caps you'll need, along with diameter (say 8 MM for your 470uf 16V caps and 10 MM for your 1500uf 6.3V caps) and capacitor values (select "470uf low ESR" for your 470uf 16V caps and "1500uf low ESR" for your 1500uf 6.3V caps). Specify the voltage of the caps you want to order (select "16v" for your 470uf 16V caps and "6.3v" for your 1500uf 6.3V caps). Then, specify the quantity (amount of caps) you'll need (I would advise you buy a little more than you need just in case you mess up something). Write any comments if you want in the "Comments and questions" box below. When you feel confident that you are ready to order, click on "Submit Request". If you put in your own valid e-mail address in that order form, I'm sure Topcat will contact you about things such as payment method, shipping, price, etc.
I'd recommend either ordering the Panasonic FM series capacitors I mentioned on Digikey.com, or ordering Rubycon capacitors from Badcaps.net.Last edited by Newbie2; 10-11-2008, 06:09 AM.My gaming PC:

Re: Busted Cap on my Video card help please!
Geez my ATI X700 has Sanyos on it (FROM THE FACTORY)
I have been looking at upgrades and have been considering Nvidia but now I think I'll stick with ATI.
To think that Nvidia in most cases charges comparably more than ATI and puts that crap on their boards blows my mind.
Then again either companies factory heatsinks on their chipsets are never adequate. That excess heat is forced to conduct through the PCB (thanks to BGA and SMT ICs) adding to the temperature of the caps.
An adequate heatsink would occupy an additional expansion slot (due to the needed space for proper air ducting and the size for an adequate fan.
They are much quieter too (larger fan lower RPM) I bought one for my X700 years back.Last edited by Krankshaft; 10-11-2008, 06:25 AM.Elements of the past and the future combining to make something not quite as good as either.

This does cause a problem on their side though, that the card manufacturers who use their chips are a dime a dozen and not necessarily good quality.Last edited by gdement; 10-11-2008, 08:06 AM.

Re: Busted Cap on my Video card help please!
Well it depends on the manufacturer of the video card.
The video cards directly made from ATI do have good-quality capacitors, but that doesn't mean NVIDIA-based video cards from other manufacturers (NVIDIA doesn't make their own video cards, just the GPU chip) use shoddy low-quality capacitors. My old Leadtek Winfast GeForce 7600GS 256MB DDR2 AGP 8X video card had Nichicon capacitors on it. A generic "Diablotek" ATI Radeon 9600XT 256MB DDR AGP 8X video card I also had before had cheap generic (The 1500uf 6.3V capacitors on it didn't have any name brand on its sleeve, and the other caps on it were "Ketuo" and "UNITED" brand, and that is not United Chemicon) capacitors on it.
It just depends on who manufactured the video card. The higher-priced video cards from name brands are supposed to have good quality components, while lower-priced video cards from generic or lesser-known brands can skimp a little to save cost and put lower-quality components on it. EVGA using poor-quality SACON caps though is a disappointment, since they are one of the better and well-known video card manufacturers.Last edited by Newbie2; 10-11-2008, 08:30 AM.My gaming PC:

Ah I didn't know that. So they don't manufacture their own cards? Wierd.
When I bought my ATI's I always bought ones made by the manufacturer and stayed away from those Third party cards.Elements of the past and the future combining to make something not quite as good as either.
