    Asus K8N-E Deluxe

    Hello All,

I went to clean the dust out of my case today and noticed more than just dust bunnies. I saw 5 caps all on the right side of the motherboard with problems. After hooking up the machine and checking the Asus Probe utility it looks like my 12v rail seems low. It's jumping from 11.584 to 11.648. PSU is an Antec 430 Watt. I guess I'm on the fence about whether this is worth investing money into for repair or just rebuilding something modern. System has been running fine.

Your motherboard is definitely worth a recap. I have an Asus K8N here that had a bad cap and replaced it. I had no success though because the PSU burnt out the chipset. But yours is still owrking so I'd suggest you recap it. A recap isn't hard but if you feel you don't want to do it, you can send your motherboard to Topcat to be repaired for a fee.

    Thanks.

You should not be using your PC that often (or at all) now that you found some bad caps. Keep on running it with bad caps and it could possibly kill the entire board beyond repair.

Get it repaired ASAP. Even if you get a new system you can still use this one as a backup PC.

Those caps wouldn't affect your voltage. Measure the voltage with a Digital Volt Meter. Even the cheapest DVMs are more accurate than the best motherboard monitors. If you verify the voltage is low you might want to void your Antec warranty and open the case before it sends your board to the scrap yard. Check around the Power Supplies section here at badcaps to see if you have one of the bad Antecs. If you do you might want to void the warranty and open the case anyways since bad caps may not cause a low voltage.

I'd rather void my warranty than risk my equipment to shoddy Antec products.

          Agreed!!
See my post about an Asus A8N SLi premium

An Antec PSU killed most of my components!!!

I definitely agree with the above.

            1. Check the voltages with a multimeter. Software readings usually aren't very accurate.

            2. Check your PSU for bad caps. I'll bet you'll find some bad Fuhjyyu's.

            3. Take appropriate action. This could be, getting the caps and repairing things yourself, or sending the affected parts in to TC for repair.

            Check Digikey for caps.

When I replace caps, I like to check what series they were and get the appropriate replacement series (in a good brand of course). Low ESR long life, low impedance, general purpose, etc. The idea being, to stay as close to the original design as possible. But that's probably not really necessary as long as you get good 105c rated low esr caps with the appropriate voltage and capacitance specs. Just something extra I like to do; thought I'd pass it on.
A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.
