    Thanks for the info Zandrax

I forgot to post this originally but I have indeed cleared the Cmos several times and installed a new battery just in case!
    Result =

Good point on the faulty lan chip + error

At present the board is not giving ANY of the audio error messages it should be when I plug headphones or a speaker into the right port (green iirc)

    Doesnt seem good....

but one positive thing is I have found this forum where people are very helpful...

    Hmmm.
    Thanks a lot kc8adu
Thats a good idea regarding desoldering the chip!!
I will try it seeing as I have nothing to lose!!

I wonder, would a fried chip like that prevent POST, if that is ALL that was wrong with the board?

Does the board self check or something? (sorry for ignorance on this guys)...

Sorry, I missed a bit off the end of the message and couldnt edit after 10 minutes

    Should be

'I would much rather not have to replace both MB and Processor, however if there is a chance the processor is fried, then I dont want to have to shop around for an S939 processor purely to fit the now not popular Socket 939 board I bought!
If there is a high risk of both being dead I would rather bite the bullet and buy two compatable AM2 items......

    Thanks

ok. I found Macro mode and actually got some usable pictures!!
Here are the caps in better view (maybe they are ok after comparing them with some other pictures of bad caps!..although there are several that are 'wonky' on the board which I thought was a bad sign?!)

and the real bad news (or good news as I at least know why the thing will not post!)

Im not actually sure what this fried chipset controls? maybe...

    HI
    thanks for the input.
I did try and focus on them but my digital camera doesnt seem to like up close shots of them!! Not sure why as its an expensive 10MP one but that was the best I could get!

Thanks for finding the PSu reviews!! Wow, it is rubbish!!

Did you mean who is the OEM of the system or PSU?
if so, the system was a custom built about 18 months ago.
    PSU is Antec POS!!!

I cant understand what the problem is then...

I have taken the system back...

Thanks for your helpful reply shadow

    Here is the PSU

    Its an Antec SP 500P

I have not opened it to ID the fault as yet. Except to say it starts smoking mildly if powered up and smells a bit

    Heres the MB

    Suspect Caps

There isnt just one bulging cap either! It seems there is 3 or 4 that have bulges and the rest are as they should be.

How can I tell what brand and series the...

    Asus A8N SLi Premium

ok guys. To cut a long story short!
My Power Supply failed a few weeks ago and smoke came out of the back of it
I duly replaced it with a quality 600w one and system powered up but did not POST.

After some checking I have found several very suspect Caps on the board...
could this be stopping it post? is it worth replacing them?

Or is the motherboard likely to have further damage that I cant repair?

    thanks
