Replacing caps is no foreign concept to me. I've replaced scores of them...with used, same-rating caps that I can find in power supplies lying around my office, etc. It's worked well enough. I have boards running for 2 years after, etc...
*presents wrists for the slapping while grumbling 'Hey. It's what I had."*
That's the problem. Where the hell do I find the correct caps to replace...brand new? I'm aware that certain brands are better, etc. Everyone loves Rubycon, etc. Great.
But I am not able to really find somewhere to buy them.
The second issue is that I read about "Ultra-low impedence" and "High-ripple" and realize that people are replacing 820uf with 1500uf @ same voltage, etc. THAT is actually the bigger problem.
Does it really matter? How do I know what I have to replace? It's not as if the cap says, "Hey! I'm high-ripple!" Y'know?
Please give me a summary that I can work with...for the love of the gods! I once submitted a request for caps to this site about two years ago...but never received a reply of any kind. Figured I'd try the forums this time.
Right now, I'm replacing the caps on yet another Intel board. This one came out of a Gateway. It's an Intel D865GLC/D865PESO board. (I generally regard it as the fore.) The Nichicon *shudders* 820uf 6.3v electrolytic caps between the CPU socket and the USB/Printer/PS2 ports as well as one other near the CPU Fan connector are all shot. Need to replace them.
Otherwise... The board posts and operates. I just won't continue to wear it down under these conditions until I replace the caps.
SUMMARY:
1.) Do I need to concern myself with specific types of caps? (e.g. 'High-Ripple' or 'Low-Impedence', etc.)
2.) Where can I buy the damn things? :P
Also... I'm not against buying higher-quality caps if they're available...and reasonably priced. (More or less...)
Pics to follow shortly. (Within 15 minutes.)
Thanks in advance!
Cyryl
