To many 16V caps...

    To many 16V caps...

    Hey guys.

    I've just gotten my VP6 and the caps i ordered yesterday.

    When looking at the board, I see the 15 1500uF 6.3V Caps. Furthermore I see 4 1000uF 16V caps scattered arround the board. But what about the last 4 1000uF 16V next to the parallel port? I have 4 1000uF 6.3V caps left from my purchase.. All kits included this... Are the caps on the board just overrated? Or should i just leave them?

    I know they arent marked on TomCats picture with red and green circles... Please help...

    Well, time to warm up the soldering iron...

    iirc those are on the +12 side of the vrm.
    there is 1 near the agp and anther near the center of the board.
    6.3 v cap there=bang!

      That kit wasnt one of mine, I dont even have any 1000uF 6.3v caps... HEHE I always use 10v or 16v caps. The (4) 1000uF caps by the parallel port only have 8v on them, so a 10v cap will work fine there. The (2) 1000uF caps in front of the AGP slot, MUST be replaced with 16v caps. Like KC8 said, there's 12-14v at their positions, and using a lesser voltage cap will blow it. The other 1000uF caps (one between the AGP and PCI1 and the other near the northbridge) can have a 6.3v cap in their places. Either of those positions have 5v or less on them. I've even seen Abit use 6.3v caps in their refurbs.

        Thanks guys.

        I just found the recap post Topcat posted, it showed in details concerning the 4 caps next to the parallel port. I went to my local dealer and bought 4 normal 105 degree 1000uF 16V caps. They should do the trick.

        I assume that I could just have left the caps alone, on the Project:VP6 articles these caps aren't mentioned for replacement, and my board featured resoable jackon caps. But now they are replaced, and out of mind.

        The kit i referred to, was the one on www.motherboardrepair.com
        He uses 15 2200uF 6,3V, 2 1000uF 6,3V and 6 1000uF 16V. So I just assumed that the 4 caps next to the parallel port was 6,3V. I guess his kit uses 6,3V for the two 16V in the center of the board, and 16V for the two next to the AGP and the four next to the parallel.

        Well the board are fixed, neatly fitted into a nice cleaned casing... But I can't find my thermal grease... Grrr... Well, to the dealer again...
        Can't wait to fire it up...
