Can this ordinary wet cap replace this FZ Cap?

    Hi there.

    So, long story short:
My XFX 9600GT fan died and took the card with it. The computer power supply didn't even start because the card was dead shorted. After a while i found a shorted transistor on the card, and a few days later a FZ branded capacitor blow while the card was outside the computer, boxed away in it's original card box (go figure). I replaced both the transistor and the capacitor, and also the fan and the card worked again flawlessly.

My question is if i can replace this FZ 1000uF 6.3v cap with a regular wet cap with the same specs of course.

Here is a shot of the original cap:

And here is the one i replaced it with:

I did google this and found the following text:

"The above FZ series capacitor is not a polymer capacitor, its just a normal wet electrolytic without a sleeve. We know this because we can see the K vents at the top of the capacitor. Still there are a few rare exceptions to the rule, Nichicon HD are not polymers but do not have visible vents. Fujitsu FPCAPs which are the yellow sleeved ones often seen on motherboards and graphics cards are a type of polymer cap but do have K vents." at this url http://www.capacitorlab.com/capacitor-types-polymer/

I know i should feel safe after reading this but it still feels odd replacing one of these guys with a regular cap.
What is your opinion, should this last a while or i'm better getting a exact match of the original cap?
(Also i know i should get a higher voltage cap than the original and a better quality one, but this one was already laying around so what gives )

»» OH BOY, my first thread and i think i already messed up. If this isn't the proper place on the forum to post this thread, ADMINS feel free to move it to the proper place ««

The FZ is a wet electrolytic cap, not a solid cap, so yes, you can replace it with a Lytic. However, that cap you used to replace it isn't that good quality. SamYoung are somewhat better than Sacon FZ, but not great. I would have tried to go with a Rubycon MBZ, Nichicon HM or equivalent. I'm not too sure what options are easiest in Portugal, though.

If you can order from the US, then (https://www.badcaps.net/store/produc...roducts_id=131) would be a good replacement. Otherwise, you could get http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/10-Sanyo-...item43a6526257 (Just a note about eBay, though. Many sellers only sell fakes, so choose your seller carefully. This seller (egekecu) is one of the few who are known to sell genuine parts).
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

      Thank you for awnsering.

At first i concluded that this would be a regular wet cap because of the K vents, but later i read on some other place that there are some rare ocasions when capacitors can have K vents and still be a polymer cap instead of a wet one (beats me why) which confused me a bit.

Yes i know this cap isn't particulary good, and to make matters worse the case where the video card is in heats quite a bit, but since it is a HTPC it isn't turned on that frequently so i guess it will last for a while. When it fails again (and if it's worthy at the time) i'll get new ones from one of the places you advised.

      Thank you.

P.S. the vent stamp shape doesn't mean a thing about what type of capacitor it is !

Well, i thought that the K or any other format of vents were safety measures for caps that could swell and blow up because of gases inside created by the electrolyte. That said i concluded that since polymer caps are a sort of dry caps and wouldn't sweel, that would be the reason why they don't tend to have any vents or their tops. Still i also read that some wet caps could also miss vents on their tops, specially if older caps (like 70's caps, give or take).

          It's a bit confusing at first :P
