    Poly caps and CapAnalyzer 88A

    Ok...here is my question...I have a XBOX 360 S ripped down...It would occasionally get the red ring of death.....but when it was given to me...I could turn on..and run around menus and the internet....but I did not have a game to put it under load......so I took apart with the idea of reseating the heatsink... two poly caps near the cpu/gpu under the heatsink have a light brown leakage around their area....So I tested with Capanalyzer...and sure enough...came back bad....but then I checked the bank of 6 on other side...and they also came back bad .....I used the 88a on a LCD board..and everything worked fine.

    Is it possible that just all those poly caps are bad...yet could still fire up the XBOX...or is the lower ESR of the Polys affecting the CapAnalyzer reading?

      Not sure how the CapAnalyzer works, but it may be fooled by the low resistances of the CPU and the GPU that those caps filter. Also, polymer caps fail usually quite violently, so you would have noticed if they did. Probably aren't bad, but I need a picture of them to see. If you're really convinced there must be something wrong with the caps, then my suggestion is to remove them and test outside of circuit. Note that you will need a good soldering station to do this. A cheap unregulated iron may not be enough to remove caps from that board.

          I believe polymer caps do not have liquid electrolyte. So if that light brown substance is leakage from those two caps, they are electrolytic, and have a problem.

              i have an 88a and iirc on polys and tantalums the display bargraph wraps back around on some parts.like when you squeeze the tweezers a bit harder to get a better connection.
              seen on mlcc too.

                  First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

                  I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

                  I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

                  Hello!

                  I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

                  The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

                  Japanese 3DO with leaking caps - (nearly) full poly replacement

                  Hi all, I've got a 1994 Japanese Panasonic 3DO with 2 leaking caps. Since all the caps are now 25 years old I decided to swap them all before more of them start to leak.
                  To reduce the danger of another leakage in the future I decided to swap every possible cap with a poly cap.
                  Has anyone here done that already and give me some hints?

                  I found a "fitting" (voltage, uF and measurements) poly cap for all but 3 caps. The largest cap is a 6800 uF 25v cap, since there aren't any 6800er polys I'll get a high quality electrolyte one with a higher temp rating. The...

                  Help with switching power supply caps

                  I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
                  I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...
