Nothing like laughing at a newb to make you feel better about yourself, eh guys? My thanks go out to the people who've made useful posts.
we are a family here and you are welcome. we do like a few jokes but there is no flaming like on other forums. feel free to ask more questions so you can progress to a successful recap.

Back to dood's original idea, that is workable with components like axial lead, thru-hole diodes and resistors or even disc ceramic caps. With the swaging of the can, the foil and paper in the core, the electrolyte (very conductive!), and the rubber "bung" it would be somewhere between a mess and disastrous to try with lytic caps.

A good, anti-static, Weller, Hakko, or Metcal (the MBZ of soldering irons) is in order, though not cheap. Be sure the tip touches the cap lead wire as well as the PCB pad, as this conducts the heat up the thru-hole better.

Well, I de-capped the motherboard using a 25w iron this morning. went fairly well... there were only two legs I couldn't get out of the hole, so I need to go find a pin or something to help them out. Here's a question, how do I know what was + and what was -? Each cap spot is marked, half colored white and the other half just natural. Is that a polarity marking? Also, one of the legs on each cap was soldered into a square on the back, the other was just a regular round hole.

Also, anyone know how long it takes for caps to be delivered through this site?
        Ludicrous gibs!

yes it is polarity marking. the white is the - which is where you will put the striped side of the cap.

however some manufacturers asus for instance have it the opposite way. also one some boards there may be a cap which is the wrong way around.

this is why it is important to make a drawing of the polarity of the original caps on the board before you remove all the caps.

what is the board you are recapping. maybe someone can make a drawing for you so you can cross check.

please PM Topcat only he knows.

I've also found that the white side corresponds to a gold strip down the one side of the cap. But nothing is actually marked + or -...

Also, I sent Chris an email on Thursday or Friday (forget which) asking for a status update, as I haven't heard anything since I got the receipt for my paypal payment...

the stripe is for negative side.
