How do I tell which terminal is what on an electrolytic capacitor?

    Are there any markings?

usually, yes since most are polarized and there's got to be a way to differentiate the two (or more...)

There is one exception to this rule and if they are “Bi-Polar/Non-Polar Electrolytic “ they might not have any markings which is negative side of the capacitor ( however I have only seen very few of them but they are out there )

AC motor run / start capacitors are also not marked unless they are motor run capacitors and they are for like air conditioning compressor and condenser fan motor they are marked only for the common terminal for a dual capacitor

Wait... so are you saying that I need to blow it up?

there are actually 3 types of electrolytic.

regular ones - they are always marked and if they are new the wires are different lengths

bipolar ones - these always say "BP" on them and are bigger than normal.

BIG ones with more than 2 pins on them to hold them to the board.
these can have 5 pins, maybe more and sometimes even have several caps in the same can.
they are common in old tv's
you should look for datasheets for such caps

do you have an actual cap your not sure about? post pictures

            Manufacturing Date of Electrolytic capacitor
            by AleXis6
Guys. could you help me please to decode some codes of main capacitor's producers.
I would like to know the manufacturing date.

Based on the information from capacitors I have - it seems easy to decode manufacturing date for Rubycon, Nichicon.

            If I understood correctly:
            1. Nichicons marks date of production as (see the attached pictures) H2116
I don't understand the meaning of first letter - may be it is code of factory.
            21 -year
            16 week
            I bought this capacitor recently.

            another one-

            RTX 3080 FE Identifying capacitor
            by Prolog
Hi people, I hope this is the correct spot to post this, I'm new to the forum.

I have an RTX 3080 Founders Edition which has a burnt up capacitor (it was in parallel with another capacitor which appears damaged too), so I am hoping to be able to identify the capacitor values and order replacements.

I hope these photos make it clear which component I am referring to:
(yes, the soldering is a bit botched from removing the blown one, I know)

I have found the board schematic (attached), but there does not seem to be a boardview available. I have never...

Need replacement advice for surface mount electrolytic capacitor
            by beogeek
            Hi all,

I have a faulty monitor, the surface mount electrolytic capacitor 33uF 100V needs to be replaced, now I can't seem to source them locally, so my question is can I replace it with a through-hole electrolytic capacitor of the same value? Or has someone got a better suggestion?

            Cheerio...

solid polymer electrolytic capacitor go boom?
            by eccerr0r
Anyone had a solid polymer capacitor fail for whatever reason?

How do they fail? Do they explode, go open, short out, ?

How about for different reasons: forcing excessive ripple current, overheating, voltage too high, reverse voltage?

Just wondering about the causes for a potential shorted solid polymer capacitor... trying to debug a board that has a ~4Ω "short" on a track... it may or may not be a capacitor but was wondering what if it were...
