Toshiba PSA40E-0EWDE-G3 replace DVD

Well after hacking the bios password,
Found the HDD is bad, so i replaced it.
Needed to reinstall XP, but this laptop can't boot from usb :-(
Tried booting from CD but the DVD didn't read the installaion disc.
Tried cleaning the lens with alcohol but with no luck.

I tried replacing the DVD drive, but every drive i tried gave me
IDE1 Error.

The drives i tried, were good, took them from working laptops
that were waiting for parts.

Is it possible that the bios can work, only with the exact model drive?

Thats good news, because i already bought the AC adaptor, HDD, hacked the bios, and ordered hinges.

any ideas why do i get the error when using diffrent drives?

Bought the exact model of DVD including firmware (used from ebay)

and it works like a charm,

wonder why only the original model works....

probably just a difference between master & slave setting.
i know some old laptop drives you could change the setting with a software utility.

all you nedd to do is to put it in slave mode, hdd is already master, and you are ready to go

I would give five Star for the guy who found this work around. I really frustrated from this error message. I have Toshiba Satellite A45-S150. I bought SD-R6472 DVD burner. I thought I wasted the money. simpley I replaced new DVD Writer and it came out with IDE#1 Error message.

I followed the instruction as stated in this website. I sutter pin 45 and 47. It took me a while because it was very hard to do, because of very small pin. After done, when I inserted, right away, I did not see error message. It fixed the problem. It READ/Write and working Fine. Thanks for tips.
