I design and build all kinds of equipment...

Today I'm trying to recover critical data from my daily driver laptop- a 13" Dell XPS 7390 2-in-1.

What a disaster of a system. From day 1 it had numerous issues, like the display driver going through several years of recurring failures to recognize external displays (13" on board- failing to support external displays basically killed the ability to be productive). Then the external audio jack only working one time directly after each boot. Meaning anytime I wanted to connect external headphones the system needed to be rebooted. The battery life was only about an hour when first purchased. That was with their marketed '8-hour' estimated battery life.
Now it won't make it to the post screen. 😱 And I found out the hard way that rather than using nvme, it has an eMMC soldered directly onto the system main board. 🥺

Dell suggested I should send my system in to them. Then they said I need to back up all the data before they will try to help me. I pointed out that's impossible to do. Never again, Dell!

I'm hoping that I will be able to salvage the data, though I suspect it will be very difficult. I see that there's a bios dump on this forum... 🤞

So I'll start things off :

My name is petabyte and I'm a forum junkie. I've been off the wagon for a number of years and countless times I've tried to stop but it's useless.. I need to feed my learning addiction.. :!:

Now just a bit about me.. I'm a fairly secretive guy in terms of privacy on the net.. especially when the things you write are visable to anyone with a net connection. But I love to share the info and knowledge I have, so that's why I'm here, to share and learn.

my formal education is that of an electronic engineer and I held a field service position with a firm for over 20 years.. that job is gone now along with company car and laptop <cry> oh well..
So needless to say (but i will) I've always tinkered with things.. yes, a hacker.. (too bad that term lost it's orignal meaning) a hardware hacker mostly.. hacking fixes in whatever I find that breaks.. (except for cars, I have friends for that) I got started a little late into the computers, my first box was an ibm pc-xt with a whopping 10meg HD,blazing fast 4.66mhz 8086 processor, 640k mem running dos 3.3.. man was I cool back then.. nevermind..

so these days, I'm forced to be a software guy as well.. as I fix pc's for friends and that usually means cleaning virus/trojan/adware and reinstalling OS's.. yeah hardware breaks but not that often  so as a result, I keep up on my software knowledge by visting a few security forums.. and trolling around a few hardware forums as well.

now I found this place from a thread at motherboards.org/forums
where I've been hanging out lately.. it's a nice friendly place with some pretty smart people.. mostly, of course, it's about mobo's.. So this person mentioned badcaps.net and I recalled reading articles a year or so ago about the faulty caps and was curious as to what you guys were up to.. and I said "w00t.. they have a forum"..

and so now.. you're stuck with me :P

so what's your story ? come on.. give it up..
                Hello everyone,

My name is Brayan and I recently joined the Badcaps community. I work in IT support and often deal with hardware repairs, especially DVRs, NVRs, and PCs.

I joined this forum because I know there are many experienced members here when it comes to BIOS/EEPROM dumps and board-level repairs, which is an area I want to learn more about and contribute to when possible.

Looking forward to sharing and learning with all of you.

                Best regards,
                Brayan

Sure! Here's a three-paragraph message you can post to the BadCaps forum to introduce yourself and share why you appreciate the community:

Hi everyone, just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. I'm someone who's always had a curiosity about how things work, especially when it comes to electronics and computer hardware. Over the years, I've picked up some hands-on experience with repairs, mostly through trial and error, and I’ve found a real satisfaction in bringing dead equipment back to life.

I came across BadCaps while researching a motherboard issue, and I was immediately impressed by how much knowledge is shared here. The detailed guides, repair logs, and troubleshooting help are incredibly valuable, especially for those of us who are self-taught or still learning. What really stood out to me is the spirit of helping others—it’s clear that many members genuinely enjoy sharing their expertise and giving back to the community.

I’m looking forward to learning more, improving my repair skills, and hopefully contributing where I can. Thanks to everyone who makes this forum such a great resource. It’s refreshing to find a place where quality information and real-world experience come together so well.

                              Hi everyone,
                              Alex, 45 yo

I started my computer journey with an Am386SX40, then moved on to an Am486DX2-80, and so on... up to now with my Samsung R780 upgraded from 2009.
I had a lot of fun in my youth with MS-DOS, disassembling computers with friends, and playing good old DOS games.

Now, I’m kind of bored with computers—so many restrictions; I can't disassemble anything anymore, or it's a pain...
I like to turn on my old 386 and 486 and play LucasArts and Sierra games again.

Here because i try to help a friend with a Probook 450 g5 corrupted bios.

Thanks for making this forum exist.
