    Stand alone dvd recorder

    I thought i would let you see a couple of pics of a CYBERHOME dvd recorder that was non operative. as you will see in the pictures there are a few bad caps on the boards. the green caps are JENPO and the large leaking black cap is an S.Y.
    are these caps the most likely cause of the problem? the board that houses the bulging JENPO'S is most likely a transformer circuit of some kind as it holds the connector for the power lead. there is not the slightest sign of life in the system. not even a glowing LED.
    Is it worth fixing?
    CYBERHOME products are made for ASDA in the UK (part of wallmart)
    what do you think? fix it or bin it?

    Most here will recommend that you replace all the capacitors regardless if they are bulging or not. A full recap will probably cost you $10.

    If the caps are bad, you won't likely get any voltage or no power.

      For the power supply, yes, recap every electrolytic capacitor. The only cap you may leave is the big 400v one as those rarely fail. Everything else needs to go. Use low-ESR caps as replacements. These are usually good choices for power supply use:
      KY, KZE, LXY, and LXZ series from United Chemicon
      FC, FK, and FM series from Panasonic
      PW, PM, and HE series from Nichicon
      ZL and YXG series from Rubycon (also YXA for the smaller caps)

      As for the logic board, replace all caps with capacitance of 470uF or above. Actually, if you can post an overall picture of the logic board and make a list with the specs (brand, series, voltage, capacitence, diameter) of the caps on the logic board and post it here, that would be better since there might be some caps that need to have lower ESR than the ones I listed above.

      Generally what you do is you try to match the ESR and ripple current rating of the new caps to the specs of the original ones. Sometimes it's hard to find a data sheet for the original caps online, especially if they are some cheap brand. That's why it's also a good idea to post a pic of the logic board.

        I prefer to replace all of the non-quality brand units. Jenpo is a known bad cap.
        My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

          Forgot to mention that I got 2 LG hdd recorders off kijiji for $20 and $25 respectively. Both of the recorders have defective dvd-rw, but I only use it for the hdd recording.

          So for me, spending $10 on new caps isn't worth the repair given what I spent for hdd recorders.

            here is a run down of the caps from the dvd recorder boards starting with the logic board.
            6.3v @ 2200uf - 1 of. (S.Y branded)

            here is the list of the caps on the power circuit board. refer to picture for the numbers.
            1 & 2 = 10v & 2200uf - 2 of (jenpo branded)
            3, 5 & 8 = 16v & 470uf - 3 of (jenpo branded)
            4 & 11 = 10v & 1000uf - 2 of (jenpo branded)
            9 & 10 = 10v & 220uf - 2 of (jenpo branded)
            6 = 25v & 47uf - 1 of (jenpo branded)
            7 = 50v & 4.7uf - 1 of (jenpo branded)
            NB: the large cap is a jenpo branded cap. value is 400v & 47uf

            the logic board has numerous other jenpo and S.Y branded caps which are very low value versions. i have also posted a photo of the power board model number.
            now to go to maplins and see what they have got

              Good pictures.

              Looks like a full recap is in order then (minus the 400v, 47uF cap and the smaller caps on the logic board).
              Before you buy the new caps, let us know. I don't think Maplin will have anything suitable. Mouser and Digikey do for sure, and perhaps RS Components as well.
