  • Re: Honda Civic ECU

I have a friend with his own Nissan business. in the past i have rebuilt absolutely loads of throttle bodies for him from the Mark 2 micra's. there are no faulty caps but the problem has always been dry solder joints on the same particular joints. its a simple fix as this video shows. dont forget to clear the stored fault code if the management lamp came on

  • Re: Best motherboard

I'm not actually trying to find the best individual make and model. I'm more interested to know which makes is currently the most reliable and are getting the best reviews. The specs are basisly what i want on the particular board so it will meet my needs.
i aint into gaming and i dont want a top end board. im a more of a middle of the road sort of guy. in other words i dont want some basic £30 board and i dont want to pay over £250.
The board does not even have to have on-board sound or video although most boards now have sound and video is...

    Best motherboard

I'm hoping to change my motherboard in the next year or so but I'm interested in knowing what is the best brand to go for.
my current board is around 5 years old now and runs like a dream. The board is an ASROCK P43D TWINS 1394. It has solid state caps fitted as standard although i don't know what make they are.

So what brands on the market at present have a good reliability record? I don't want a board that is going to fail after 2 or 3 years. even my last board which was an ABIT KG7R had no problems in the 7 years i owned it. it was still going well when i sold it. I'm looking...

  • Re: Computer fan noise and maintenance

my system is nothing special. i use a Icute 750w modular PSU. This has a very quiet fan.
in my case i have a pair of arctic cooling 120mm case fans. these are fitted using rubber mountings to stop the case vibrating. i also run them at 7 volts using an inline resister between the fan and board connectors. when it comes to cleaning them i use a half inch paintbrush with the bristles cut to half the length. i have never needed to lubricate them in the 5 years they have been in the case and they are still extremely quiet.
    My CPU...

  • Re: Stand alone dvd recorder

here is a run down of the caps from the dvd recorder boards starting with the logic board.
    6.3v @ 2200uf - 1 of. (S.Y branded)

here is the list of the caps on the power circuit board. refer to picture for the numbers.
    1 & 2 = 10v & 2200uf - 2 of (jenpo branded)
    3, 5 & 8 = 16v & 470uf - 3 of (jenpo branded)
    4 & 11 = 10v & 1000uf - 2 of (jenpo branded)
    9 & 10 = 10v & 220uf - 2 of (jenpo branded)
    6 = 25v & 47uf - 1 of (jenpo branded)
    7 = 50v & 4.7uf - 1 of (jenpo...

  • Re: List of Bad Cap Manufacturers

you should add JENPO and S.Y. just came across a few in a dead standalone dvd recorder. jenpo's were bulging and the S.Y was leaking like a sieve

  • Stand alone dvd recorder

I thought i would let you see a couple of pics of a CYBERHOME dvd recorder that was non operative. as you will see in the pictures there are a few bad caps on the boards. the green caps are JENPO and the large leaking black cap is an S.Y.
are these caps the most likely cause of the problem? the board that houses the bulging JENPO'S is most likely a transformer circuit of some kind as it holds the connector for the power lead. there is not the slightest sign of life in the system. not even a glowing LED.
    Is it worth fixing?
CYBERHOME products are made for ASDA in the UK (part...

  • Re: What Has Caused This To Happen?

Too late now as the board has been scrapped. the owner could never get it to run stable and was always having blue screens. what i am going to do is remove the rubycon caps. you might laugh but the replacement for the system is an old pentium 3@700mhz and it runs sweet as a dream. as the saying goes dont fix it if its not broken

  • What Has Caused This To Happen?

This post is not about bad caps as a whole but as the photos show its possible that a tiny cap or similar component could be blown. The burning on the motherboard is clear to see. The motherboard is an Intel OEM board from an Acer computer. I can think of 3 possible causes of the damage.

1/ As the computer was run for long periods with no side cover its possible that a metallic item was dropped on the board while connected to the mains
2/ One of the front USB ports are damged causing a possible short circuit
3/ The heatsink and fan unit was totally clogged with dirt...

  • Re: Bad Caps on an Abit KG7 Mobo

the kg7r is around 5 years old when you made this post so it would of been past its 1yr warranty. my kg7r is 8yr old but the caps are great. its one of those things

  • Re: KG7 That Didn't Make it

there are 3 models in the range so make sure you use the correct one you have
    KG7 LITE (2 MEMORY SLOTS)
    KG7 (4 MEMORY SLOTS)
    KG7R (4 MEMORY SLOTS + RAID + 4 IDE CONNECTORS)
you use the same file to flash the BIOS on all 3 as it only programmes what it needs

  • Re: Abit KG7 screenshot

i have a KG7R and i have never had any trouble with it. it looks as if the caps in the position that are leaking may be a different make to the ones on mine. on my board. mine are nichicon's. it still runs well now since i first purchased it in October 2001 (£147). it has had a LOT of heavy use as a file server and was on 24/7 a lot of the time

i think i have found out the make of the motherboard. it seems like it could be a JETWAY. Whatever the make its a load of crap and will go in the bin. it was only around £30 anyway. its been replaced with a ASROCK ALive NF7G-GLAN

  • Re: Identifying Soldering Faults

just to inform forum members that it is not just computers and other similar items that have bad solder joints. i have a friend who owns a business specialising in Nissan cars. there are various models of nissan that are prone to faulty air flow meters. this is the part on the inlet manifold that looks like a carb. if it is the type with an alloy plate around 2 by 2.5'' then i will let you into a little secret. first of all you need to remove the unit which is easy. make sure you disconnect the battery first. if you remove the little plate by cutting...

  • Re: Bad Biostar

I now have this motherboard on the bench. there is a total of 18 caps that are bulging and/or leaking brown gunge. it is NOT a Biostar board. to be honest i dont know what make it is. the handbook says ''motherboard'' That is a brand i have never heard of but it is highly likely that it is a clone. it has a SIS 730s chipset. the model is 830CH. It was purchased in 2002 so i suppose 7 years is quite good. every single cap is made by ''GSC'' I have posted a photo showing every blown cap. first signs of trouble was a freezing keyboard and mouse and when i went to install...

  • Re: Cleaning Motherboards

Having read that some people use water to clean boards is doubtful. on the other hand i have reclaimed old computers from a waste disposal unit that have been standing in the rain for days on end and after i have stripped them and let the parts dry for a couple of days they fire up as if they had never been wet in the first place. that is presuming they were only dumped due to their age and not due to parts failure. if you use water make sure it is either rain or distilled water.

  • Re: Cleaning Motherboards

i worked in the electronics industry around 1984/5 where i was making the original psion organiser hand held. in them days we used to clean the PCB with freon which was boiled in a vat (boils at a very low temperature). we used to dip the assembled PCB into the freon for 2 or 3 minutes then remove it. the only problem was that you could not dip a board containing any variable resistors as they would have the factory applied lubricant washed out of them which would cause premature failure. considering that we also made a lot of boards destined for military...
