    Samsung le40r81b no backlight

Good day folks. Got this Samsung telly here which has no backlight and I'm pretty sure the CCFLs are to blame, but I thought I'd ask for another opinion, as there are a couple of other things that seem "off". It's an unusual setup which I haven't encountered before: the inverter is powered straight off the main cap CP809 at 380v and despite having an HV transformer on the PSU itself, there's also a separate inverter board with smaller transformers (what you usually expect to see in a TV like this), so how does this work ? HV is turned into even higher HV ? The control IC ICI801 is on the PSU, not the inverter. I've attached the schematic for the PSU.

The main cap is slightly bulged and it just so happens it also feeds the inverter, so that could be one of the reasons. Another oddity is that I can't measure this cap: when the PSU is in standby ("ON" pin NOT strapped to 5v), I get around 300v on it (which is slightly low for my taste). When I turn the PSU on, the meter goes apesh!it and can't "lock" onto a reading...it seems to me the ripple becomes so high on that cap that it's like trying to measure a high frequency AC, which usually results in this erratic behavior of a regular run of the mill meter like this one...too bad I don't have a scope. There was a blown cap on the 12v rail which I replaced just for good measure, though I was sure it has nothing to do with the issue at hand. ICI801 does receive VCC, so I can assume it operates properly. After a bit of digging, I even tried tying one of its pins (I think 14) to GND in an attempt to fool it into turning on, but it didn't work, hence why I believe the problem may not be strictly inverter-related.

At the end of the day it could very well still be the classic CCFL lamp failure, but it doesn't even come on for like a second...not even a flash, I though there'd be at least a flash of backlight or something, but no - nothing at all. TV works fine otherwise, I forgot to mention.

Any thoughts ? I'll replace that cap no doubt, obviously, but what about the rest ? Anything else I should look out for ? Picture of the bottom is pretty piss-poor, but I can take a better one if so desired.

I believe as you say, that you would need to initially sort out the ripple problem since high ripple would have an affect on other part of the circuits which may be connected to the PFC line.

The feed to a transformer could well be just to provide isolation between the two circuit boards and could be set at a 1:1 ratio.

Interesting read. Although it mentions some blink codes, mine doesn't give any - it runs normally, so perhaps it's for a different brand. Judging by the KDL model being mentioned, I reckon it's for a Sony.

Sony has blink codes, Samsung does not have it. So just look at the Samsung Video instead.
That big main cap should be removed and replaced.

            Re: Samsung le40r81b no backlight

I'll go for the cap first and then look into firing it up even with a failed lamp...it's not even trying to come on, so I suspect PFC is not reaching the required 380v and the inverter enters what I believe is called UVLO (under voltage lock-out I think)....just a theory.

              Re: Samsung le40r81b no backlight

Replacing the cap fixed the issue As I removed it and shook it around, I could hear like a rubber ball bouncing around inside of it, so all of its insides must've dried out and shrunk...case closed.

Turns out it wasn't a CCFL issue after all - go figure...

Samsung UN55NU7300F Curved TV. Half side backlight out. Fixed by just removing the rear snap cover
                by howardc64
TV was fixed just after removing Samsung's rear snap cover.

This curved TV's construction is rather interesting. When the snapped on back is removed, rest of the TV will relax the curvature. Top of LCD panel is loose as it wants to straighten out against the slightly curved bezel. Snapped back provide most of the curvature shape. So just simple disassembly of rear cover will allow the rest of the TV frame to relax its curvature. Thats probably what fixed it but no idea which connection. 4x LEDs are edge lit.

Maybe PSU->backlight connector didn't have a good contact?...

                • Prior owner tried a replacement main board. No difference.
                • Samsung 2x red blinking standby LED = panel fault
                • Jumpered FB_TRDY_1 (pin 1 CN1300 left. main tcon->left side buffer boards) and FB_TRDY_3 (pin 95 CN1301 right. main tcon->right side buffer boards) This allows testing individual T-Con (on main board) connection to panel on this Samsung. Found fault on left side (viewing from rear of TV)
                • Each side has 2 buffer boards, disconnected left side flex between 2 buffer boards. Fault is on the left most board.
                • Tape masking eventually isolated to CN1300 pin 15 (CKV4_GOA) Display

Samsung UE60KU6079 backlight okay mainboard responsive, no picture, no sound
                by Ierwin
                Hello everyone,
Ive got a UE60KU6079 on the workbench that is giving me some headaches trying to troubleshoot.
The previous owner stated that there had been white dots on the screen which from the description sounded like some lenses fell of the backlight LEDs.
He had opened the TV from the back, trying to get to the backlight, supposedly gave up, reassebled everything and gave the TV to me.
I expected the worst like ripped COF cables or a cracked panel but could not find anything like that yet.
Anyway I still fully expect that there has been something seriously damaged...
