Sony KDL-52V4100 with almost white image

I just want to share the fix on my Sony KDL-52V4100 LCD TV set with a bad T-Con board.

The problem was an almost white image, typical of a bad chroma chip. After verification, I effectively found on the T-Con board that the chroma chip was outputting only half of the 18 chroma reference voltages. Under the FPC_LEFT ribbon connector, VGMA1-VGMA8 test points were fine producing different voltages in descendant values from about 20 volts to about 7 volts, but VGMA9-VGMA18 were all at zero volt.

Since the service manual for this board is not available, I found that the chroma chip was IC321. It is a ISL240007IRZ made by Intersil (now Renesas). It is a programmable 14-Channel x 2 Bank, 8-bit TFT-LCD VREF Generator. Each bank has its own I2C serial interface. Sadly, the detailed spec sheet for this chip is not available. So no pinout.

I was about to order a replacement chip when I remarked 4 test points labeled VREFL_L, VREFL_H, VREF_U_L and VREFU_H. I figured out that they were the two I2C serial interface to program each bank of the chroma chip. Now, if one of the two I2C serial interface was missing the programming signal, it would explain why half of the reference voltages were missing.

Bingo! I found RG18 connected to REFU_L that was open. It was a 0603 resistor of 6.8K ohm (marked 682). I didn't have a replacement resistor on hand, but in my scrap pile of boards I found a 0804 6.8K ohm resistor that was an almost perfect replacement. After soldering it in place, connecting back the T-Con board and powering up the TV set it was fixed. Perfect image.

The fix is applicable to the following Sony models that share the same TCON board :
    KDL-52S4100
    KDL-52S5100
    KDL-52V4100
    KDL-52V5100

It should also apply to a similar T-Con board having the same THF9301 main chip, like the FHD60C4LV1.1 and the 320HAC2LV0.0.

I hope it will help someone.

Great work! I have seen a lot of these boards with gamma problems I've dealt with a few myself. I threw one out because I couldn't figure out why have the voltages were missing.
Did I leave the soldering iron on?

        Hi,

Your post was of great help to repair a Samsung TV (LE32A568) equipped with similar T-CON : 320HAC2LV0.0 LJ94-02296C / BN81-01689A

Sometimes it was working sometimes it was white...
And quess what: same bad voltages... and same RG18 broken resistor. The only difference is the value: "272" meaning 2.7k , and I was measuring 19k !
I replaced it with another 2.7k ... and the TV is back to life !

        Thank you very much !!!

Sony KD-65x7500D - double image - Tcon or Panel?
          by rimwall
This TV was showing a fine image and pulsing with a partial double image (offset vertically) every few seconds. I taped 8 clock pins on one ribbon cable from the Tcon to the panel. It stopped the double image, but some pulsing in intensity was still visible. I then taped another 8 clock pins on the same ribbon cable and the image is now ‘fixed’. Although I understand this results in some loss of resolution, presumably because the clock signal degrades as it passes horizontally across the screen.

I am wondering - do these symptoms and ‘fix’ mean that it’s a Tcon fault or...

Sony XBR-65X900F black and white image on one side (fading saturation)
          by NSkyLab
I though I've seen all possible kinds of failures but this one is new...
Colors saturation is gradual.y fading out on the left side of the screen (all colors are fading out). While B&W image is looking good.
I tried replacing TCon but nothing changed. So this is looking like the panel failure. Is there a chance it can be fixed?
Any useful measured can be done on the panel's narrow pcbs? Is there may be something similar to taping trick to fix this issue?...

Sony KV-XJ29M31 CRT TV - Very dim image on turn on
          by Dreamcazman
Hi all, I recently picked up a Sony KV-XJ29M31 CRT TV (BG3R chassis, Australian model) cheaply & completed the RGB mux mod on it for some retro gaming. That worked great, however, I have another problem which I hope someone can help me with or at least steer me in the right direction.

Basically, the issue is when it's cold, it takes a while (like 2 mins) for the picture to come up. I think the image is there, it's just very dark or dim. I can hear the degaussing sound & I can change inputs & hear audio but no image.

Once it's running properly, it keeps...
