Samsung plasma pn60f5300 -- no picture-- bad panel ??

Hi everyone !

Got this Samsung PN60F5300 with no picture.

Checked all voltages and looks good (5V, 15V, VS, VA, VE, VSC) and stable.

The control board is integrated in the mainboard so I couldn't perform a self test. I don't see any pins to short for that purpose on the mainboard.

Anyway I have the led in the mainboard blinking every 1 second (acording with a seller on ebay that's indicates normal behavior, so he advice me not to purchase his mainboard)

The TV responds to the remote. (ON-OFF ok)

So I'm stuck and the only thing remaining is the panel.

The panel looks good to me. I disconnected the upper buffers (just to test) and no difference. (no shorts...)

Any opinion will be greatly appreciated !!

In a dark room do you get a slight glow from the panel?

All a blinking light means is that the control board portion of the main board is still working - not that the whole main board is. Samsung just moved the control board components over to the main board to reduce assembly costs (Panasonic did this years back, it's a wonder Samsung took so long to be honest.)

Hi Tom, thank you for the answer , sorry for the delay , I was out of town.

No, no glow at all.

Last night I checked just that in the dark and there is no glow.. (tried several times)

Do you know if there is a way to self test the panel in thin mainboard ? (color patterns)

The pics are not quite clear enough, can you get a focused and sharp picture of the whole board? If not, sections of the board will do, but they need to be in focus.

Ok. I was just leaving . Tomorrow I'll take them better.
Do you think that the main could be bad? (not the control part of it)

Main board is a likely possibility but we need to rule out some other things first.

Sorry, been busy with work...

I think your test pattern jumper is the four holes in the top right corner, next to the black connector. There are options marked "3,4:NT", this is the place to connect to enable the test pattern mode.

You need to connect holes 3 & 4 together then turn the TV on and see what happens. If you get test patterns everything is working except the main board. (The part of the main board that generates test patterns is separate to the rest of the main board. It is hopefully still working.)

If this happens, you know you have a dud main board, so that needs to be replaced. Otherwise, the fault requires more diagnosis.

Ok, I see it. Looks that 3-4 is for NTSC AND !-2 for PAL.
It's 3.08 AM here I barely see the keyboard!..hahahaha!
Tomorrow I'll check it and post the results.

Yeah...it's 3-4 for NTSC and 1-2 for PAL but IIRC the PAL jumper doesn't do anything unless the set is in the correct mode from the service menu. So always use 3-4.

The NTSC/PAL setting comes down to the panel refresh rate; the panel needs to have a slightly different driving scheme for different refresh rates.

Well, nothing happened. Shorted 3-4 and... nada !
What i "discovered" is that there is a small crack in the panel ! (ggrrrrrrrrr!!! why didn't see it before!)
Here's the picture. (looks big but it's small in the bottom right corner, like 1.5 cm diameter)
Do you think that can be the cause of the problem ?

Might sound obvious that a crack would leak the gas but I've seen other panels with small cracks and working fine ! Possibly depends on how deep the crack is and if it reaches the cells or only the external glass.

Next time I'll check more exhaustively the panel because customers, in general, won't tell or sometimes don't even know that it was hit !
