Single chip HV PWM controller failures

Getting a lot of the single chip SMPS controller failures lately, there seems to be a run on 4 and 5 year old devices at the moment (seem 15 over the last month). LG, Samsung and Sony TVs use them a lot.

They all seem to fail with blowout of the high voltage fets. I live in an area of 240VAC mains in the first place which means reasonably high DC rectification, but most of the devices are 600-650VDc rated.

Removed a MIP2 part from a JVC (Sonys used these chips a fair bit) tested the supply without it and put the board aside. Damm thing bit me when I picked it up over a day later! Never seen a cap hold charge like that for longer than 24 hours.

At least 6 of these were ICE3B0365J chips. Not knowing why, I'm hesitant about putting the same ones back, so have been replacing them with ICE3BR1765J parts instead. I looked through the datasheets and the only differences were much better on resistance for the fet (lower heat) and built in soft start (you have to remove the existing external soft start cap).

Is this occurring in just my area or is it happening to other people?
