    HP-T5054 panel glows- no display

Hi everybody. Just wanted to tell my sad story of a Samsung pos. I bought this for $40.00 with the usual clicking on and off.

I isolated all the boards and still clicking. I found a bunch of fet's shorted on the power supply. I ordered a kit which had everything I needed and I had VS and VA voltage and no clicking. Sounds good so far, Right?

I plugged everything back in and hear a terrible hum from the power supply. I ripped the power plug out and did further checking.

Turns out, I had a shorted Y sustain and an upper buffer. Ordered an upper buffer and a kit for the y main. Tried again and everything looked good but no display.

All my voltages were good including Vsc and Ve and I had panel glow. I read an old thread from kevinm34232 back on 3/24/13 with panel glow and no display.

It looks like it was the logic board. So I will be checking that next.

I guess the reason I started a thread, was because I cant believe a Samsung plasma can have 4 bad boards. Unbelievable!!! I would rather tackle a Panasonic because they have great manuals and trouble shooting guides.

I will post my results if I decide to carry on.

When I first started doing this, I'd research as much as possible all the faults on a model and then see if the parts were

    a. available
    b. affordable

Probably could have warned you if asked but these are pretty old heavy setsand unless you can replace those buffer ICs then I'd expect expensive.

Last one of these I touched which was one from my work, except same thing.

Maybe it was the 50 million attempts to turn it back on that did all the damage.

PSU was shot, Va,VS, Ymain shot and burnt, more damage than the norm, Upper Ybuffer shot, burnt.

had a parts list running to fix it but when I got to the buffer and started on the chip, it was farked. board burnt through, tracks gone.

    Landfill

In the Panny divison, just once I've screwed myself. SS,SN,A-board and then corroded ribbons throughout. Got it going in the end but way over budget and unsellable. Still have it today but the ribbons don't like being disturbed.

Often a decoupling-cap, a MLCC fails short on the Bottom Address Buffer-board, and blows the tiny 5A SMD Va Fuse on that bottom board...

You'll need to carefully remove the metal strip covering the bottom address buffer-board along the bottom of panel and check the small SMD caps. The failed one will be obvious--Burned--I had one exactly the same yesterday, which will make 5 in total and counting.....

The 5A SMD fuse is near where the three-pin cable from the Y-SUS connects to that bottom board.

I don't bother replacing the cap, I just cut it out of circuit. There's two for each COF chip supply, and another the other side of the 1 ohm feeding each chip...

Re: HP-T5054 panel glows- no display

Thanks for the replies, I will check the the lower address buffers. I know this is an old set, but I always like the challenge. I have about $45.00 in the two kits, and the buffer was $60.00.

So I am over budget at this point and am hoping to still get it running with out too much expense.

On the post I mentioned, he had replaced the logic board which is the point of no return.

I will check the fuse and caps on the board you mentioned Alastair E and I would be really happy if thats what it is. Thanks for your input.

          Problem

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....

LG 49UJ6500 LCD panel lighter band that goes away
          by howardc64
49UJ6500 LCD panel has a lighter band on top when first powered on. Goes away (or gets much fainter) after TV on for a few min. After powered off for awhile and power back on, same band appears. If powered on immediately after powering off, no or much fainter band. Running the latest firmware.

Disassembled the TV and lifted the LCD panel during testing. Band is on the LCD panel (can see the band on the panel as I lift it slightly) Backlight is perfectly even at the top edge. Double checked LCD panel alignment in the frame and is perfect but since band moved with the panel, its on...

SAMSUNG UN50TU8000F rebooting, backlight ok. No 12v to panel boards.
          by triplefour
TV flashes backlight then reboots over and over. no image. Client said it used to have image for a bit before rebooting. Got worse over time.

          tcon is built into mainboard.
Only one cable goes to panel boards.
there is a cable from one panel board to the other that links them.
cost cutting measure that results in us having harder time to diagnose.
removing the link to the second panel board allows TV to stay on with stable backlight but no image.
used cut off tape method to mask 1 maybe 2 pins on the side of the cable that goes to that second panel board....
