    LG 50PC3D with flickering display

I have an old 50" plasma, LG 50PC3D. The symptoms are: sound is OK but the screen flickers several times per second... white, black, white, black, etc.

So far I have found the following:
    - Fan works
    - no ticking sounds from any boards
    - no visibly pregnant caps
    - 5V is at 4.98 VDC
    - Vs is at 197 VDC
    - Va is at 59.7 VDC
    - ZSUS heat sinks are both warm
    - Top YSUS heat sink is cold
    - Bottom YSUS heat sink is warm

I don't wish to spend much time or money on this TV as it is a 10-year old model. What do you experts suggest may be at fault?

Re: LG 50PC3D with flickering display

Almost certainly the Y-Sustain board. This is a very typical symptom of a failed IPM on that board. Usually in this case, you won't have a blown fuse or short on the IPM itself. About 10% fail in this manner. More commonly, you end up with a blown fuse and no light coming from the screen at all. A used sustain board will run you about $100-$125 but a better idea is to get the one you have repaired. A used one is prone to failure and you never know how many hours of life it will have left in it.

Thank you very much for your help. I will likely just retire this TV.

Mounting and Handling Guidelines for TO220 TO220F TO247 Cases / Packages

The TO220, TO220F and TO247 are the popular packages for power devices because of their versatility and ability to dissipate moderate amounts of heat. This application note describes the basic guidelines for handling power MOSFETs in TO220, TO220 and TO247 packages shown in Figure 1. Please note that only mechanical and soldering guidelines are covered here. Additional precautions are required for isolating high voltage rated devices to meet safety regulations.

Fixing an I-Inc IF281D for the 3rd time, now with added flickering!
        by DrvLikHell
Hello everybody! It's been nine years and I'm back again with the same monitor that several people here helped me fix back then. The first time, I replaced two caps as was recommended here and the original problem was solved. Then it started acting up a few years later and I came back for a parts list and replaced a few more caps (I didn't make a post about that and don't remember which ones), and again the problem was solved. This time, however, I'm not sure if it's caps.

The monitor stays on but certain colors will flicker. Generally it's darker colors like dark greys or dark blues,...

Heat sink modding... thermal mass vs surface area?
        by eccerr0r
Well, my Gateway monitor seems to eat caps. So I was thinking there was some systemic issue going on here and what I'm thinking: the heatsink is blocking convection flow and thus roasts capacitors by radiation!

Now what I wonder. This piece of aluminum heatsink is obviously blocking convective flow. I could add a fan but there are some other issues involved here. How about...drilling holes into the aluminum?

The holes would add surface area and allow air to convectively flow through the heatsink which could reduce temperatures. However this would of course reduce the...

LG 42PC3 buffer output doesn't follow YSUS
        by legg
LG42PC3D -UD originally with green lamp but no display or audio.
Owner says was working, then went 'pop'.
        All 5V caps bulging. replaced.
All PSU output voltages within spec but -Vy is low on YSUS.
One of three parallel fets between SUS_OUT and SUS_DN is zenering,
eventually shorts DG. Replaced all 3 - -Vy now OK.

Y scan buffer test point does not follow YSUS output below -50V

Note: This unit seems to expect YSUS output to park at -Vy in between
drive signal pattern periods. A replacement drive signal board confirms this....
