Samsung HPT5044X/XAA plasma keeps blowing buffer ICs

This one started with no picture but had sound, protection light lit on YSUS. Found the blown buffer IC and replaced it. I also used a eBay repair kit on the YSUS which replaced all the blown FETs and more.

Plugged it in and the screen lights up, but with garbage on screen. About 15 seconds later one of the IC on the top buffer board blows and YSUS protection comes on again.

Replaced blown buffer IC then check YSUS. Nothing is shorted this time. Installed both and turn on TV. Garbage on screen, 15 seconds later a different buffer IC blows.

Repeated this a few more times and now I have gone through 5 ICs already. Three of them on top board and two on bottom board. I am guessing that YSUS is malfunctioning in some way, but it's not the same failure that it had originally.

    Any idea?

Hate to say this...but repeated blowing of Y buffers..particularly the SAME One..often means a bad PANEL.

Different IC every time. Still think bad panel?

Re: Samsung HPT5044X/XAA plasma keeps blowing buffer ICs

got samsung plasma tv from recylce bin ...the panel have miniature crack!!

i was hoping i can fix it

trouble shooting reveals that the problem is in the y-buffer ...the y board tests ok

...looks like the fate is with me ...with an incredible luck i find yet another plasma in recycle bin and of an identical model

i find all boards has been stolen by another tech (maybe) but the y-buffer is there

i quickly got the y buffer ...the problem that it was full of dust dirt and tiny rust

i started cleaning it with thinner solution and brushing it with tooth brush to cleanse all the rust and dust away

after the job is done i installed the buffer in tv and i fired up the tv ....and guess what??

the tv worked!! the picture is there ...but it is not perfect...it sort of "double image " problem

with the word "no signal" appears twice ...

i tried to reset the ribbons ...while the tv is off and when i refire the tv ....it is nothing

i tested and find the buffer got shorted again

        from your experience

could the buffer be shorted because of the fact that it has poor connection to the ribbons due to rust

or the bad panel (because of the small crack)is loading down the buffer "but the picture appeared ...smeared yes

        ...but it was there "

Schematic or datasheet for Plasma TV buffer chip
          by Yanleb
          Hi all,

I'm interested in understanding how a buffer board chip is working. I know there's about 90 outputs per chip to the plasma panel, but I'm more interested to know about the input pins. I guess that some of them are address pins, but I want to know more.

So far I've found nothing at all. I haven't found any datasheet about the various buffer chips, and I haven't found any schematic for the buffer board using them (Y Buffer Board in Samsung's terminology).

Any information will make me happy. It can be from any buffer chip or plasma TV manufacturer....

TCL 55S425 few horizontal lines, potential failure on both side of panel/buffer board
          by howardc64
All left and right refers to looking from rear of TV (or looking from front with TV upside down)
          • TV came with vertical bars and no image. Found faulty TVS on left buffer board. Also replaced T-Con (may have damaged the original while hot air removing components, board has slight warp) and have full image but few horizontal lines on the screen. Some of the lines appears to be 2 pixel tall while others are 1 pixel tall.
          • Disconnecting left and right buffer board potentially reveals problems on both sides with different signals (unless this T-Con require jumper like Samsung FB_TRDY1&3) Fault

          Problem

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....

LG 42PC3 buffer output doesn't follow YSUS
          by legg
LG42PC3D -UD originally with green lamp but no display or audio.
Owner says was working, then went 'pop'.
          All 5V caps bulging. replaced.
All PSU output voltages within spec but -Vy is low on YSUS.
One of three parallel fets between SUS_OUT and SUS_DN is zenering,
eventually shorts DG. Replaced all 3 - -Vy now OK.

Y scan buffer test point does not follow YSUS output below -50V

Note: This unit seems to expect YSUS output to park at -Vy in between
drive signal pattern periods. A replacement drive signal board confirms this....

LG Plasma TV Bad Y Buffer Replacement
          by Bad_Boards
          Background:
I have a LG 50PA550 Plasma TV which stopped displaying a picture. The sound works just fine. The outputs of the power supply board were within 2% of the expected values. After removing the Y top buffer the bottom half of the TV started working.
          Question:
Do I have to order both a Y-Buffer and Y-Sustain board to fix this?
Could I somehow check the Y-Sustain board to see if there was any damage done to it?
