Samsung LN46C600 No Video / Audio Fine

History: Samsung LN46C600 worked flawlessly with NO weird precursors (powering off unexpectedly, long powering cycles, etc.) -- one night the video just went dark/black. Audio remains clear. Unplugging the set for 24-hours and retrying did not resolve the problem.

This seems to be somewhat common as I found 5 BadCaps forum posts that appears similar to mine. From those I cobbled together a course of action.
    1) Flashlight Test: Performed in dark room and verified image is visible on screen under flashlight.
    2) Removed back panel and performed visual inspection of major components. Other than dust, everything looked normal.
    3) Performed visual inspection of caps (LN46C600_Cap_1.jpg and LN46C600_Cap_1.jpg). None appear to have any dimpling, raised tops or were "leaking" any goo/material.
    4) Used my DMM to test fuses (F1 and F2 in LN46C600_PSU.png) -- both were good. As a sanity check, I keep a blown fuse in my kit as a control (I don't do this that often).

Backlight Test: Here's where I got a little confused. There's this nugget in thread "Samsung LN46C600 audio but no pic"

    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showth...light=LN46C600

"You can also remove the cable between the main board and the power supply/inverter board and then power up the TV, the backlights should come on right away (the power supply board has built-in pull-up resistors)."

I am not a schematic guy, so while I tried to follow it (thanks for the link by the way), I thought I would ask for clarification, In my uploaded image LN46C600_Main.png, is the cable referred to the one marked A in my diagram? Or is one of the others?

Once I perform this backlight verification test and assuming I get backlight on power up, does this indicate a problem with the CI818 capacitor mentioned in other posts?

    Thanks for your input!

That white connector with black wires going back to the main board, if this power supply board has pull-up resistors then when you remove that connector and power up the TV you should then see the backlights come on right away. If not, then check that white cap by the fuse is the common failure part.

You will have to remove it to check its capacitance.

The PSU # for my Samsung LN46C600 is BN44-00341B.

Thanks for the clarification -- when I disconnect the black wire with white connector between the Main Board and PSU the TV doesn't appear to come on, either via front pressure switch or remote. So no backlights either. I think I will go with God and use a bleed resistor to de-energize the two big CAPS and remove the PSU board. I don't have a Cap Meter, so I guess I will get one of those and fish out my soldering set to remove and test that cap.

There still doesn't appear to be any bulging, etc., but the problem seems consistent with what others have reported and experienced. This has been really nice TV and would like to keep it in service for a few more years...

      Thanks again,

        Schematic and more info:
        https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showth...ht=BN44-00341B

It does have pull-up resistors, so you need to check the PFC Voltage booster as shown in that thread, leave out that cable to the main board, the switch on the TV will not have any affect in this setup.

Will peruse that thread again and give it a whirl this evening. Also Cap Meter should arrive today and I ordered a pair of 0.47uF 630VDC poly caps from mouser.com, just so I have them on hand.

          Thanks for all your help.

Replace C1818 .47/400v ( original is white box type cap usually has bulged sides )
Practice visual acuity technique and in this case, a Cap Meter is not necessary !

              Samsung LN46C600: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

Sorry for the delay, work has been crazy. Last Saturday I finally pulled the capacitor out. When I held it in my hand, there was a VERY subtle bulge on one side. It was nigh impossible to see while in place on the PSU board, but you could feel it and it cast a small shadow in the right light (tried to take a picture, but could get the right light). I measured the cap BEFORE I took it out with my new Cap Meter ($17 from Amazon) and got a 0.00. Not sure why it has to be removed for measuring as I got the same Bluto Blutarksy GPA reading (0.00) after removing it as well. At a minimum, this was a very Bad Cap.

After negotiating a few personal challenges measuring the lead width (15mm) and ordering the CORRECT replacement capacitor from mouser.com -- a pair with the correct specs and lead width and rated 630VDC arrived on Tuesday. I slipped that bad boy into the lead holes and soldered it into place. I held my breath as my Samsung LN46C600 came back to life, hopefully for 3-4 more years. Picture looks great (and I even managed to avoid scratching the LCD screen).

While I had to buy a few new tools, the actual pair of caps was less than $8 delivered. Thanks for your assistance and advice!

Thanks for the feedback. The reason I have you test the cap is to show you what you will read on the bad cap since bad cap may not show any sign of bulging.
the cap is also special cap with high pulse capability not just generic poly film.

                  same TV same problems.

C1818 is bad for me as well. I'm having a bit of difficulty locating this cap. I find poly films but not a rect ceramic like the one needing replacement.
.47pf 10% 650VDC with a 15 mm pin placement? Is there a special nomenclature for this?

can anyone point me in the direction of this part? A link would be appreciated!

I doubt any local stores near me carry this. Sad part is I used to live close to an EPO (electronics Parts Outlet) they carried all this kind of stuff.

I checked on mouser.com and couldn't find the .47 uF 15mm lead width cap.
Has anyone been able to find this online???

                          Hi,

My barely 3 year old TV has stopped displaying video, although the video output comes for a few seconds after turning ON which displays the manufacturers logo then shows the home screen (all this with some blue flicker) then the video goes blank and the screen is dark blue with the backlight on. The audio output works perfectly and the TV also takes in voice commands(smart TV).

                          RT6939 - 2nos.

and all these chips are getting real hot within a minute, I dont know if this is normal....
