Shit ignore the post above I messed it up. I removed the video as I found a better method of actually repairing the orginal strips of Leds so this mod is pointless and uneeded. I have a video of that going up soon that I filmed today.

Re: Toshiba 40L1333 Led Backlight Mod

I bought a 100 chip led's 0.5W quite similar to the originals in these crappo panels, but about 2mm wider.
I havent tried them in a panel yet, but stringing 4 in series across 12V lead-acid and no resistor, they are bloody bright....

Get bloody hot too after some seconds with no board to fix 'em to, I just soldered them together for a larf...

Cost a couple of quid for the 100, from Ebay--China.

I got some 1W ones much bigger with a tiny lens over the chip/yellow stuff. They are even brighter and don't get quite as hot, again-- no heatsink. Just messin'
--Stay reasonable temp when run on 90-100mA...
        TELEFIX

How PLASMA SCREENS WORK, X-SUS and Y-SUS what they do--

Yeah I would do that but I salvage mine off of smashed Led Tvs got lots of them lol Also I would recomend you use 1w Leds tbh Alistair if your installing them same package size but will last longer. These Tv's run the Leds too hard having higher wattage will help them last a little long IMO

The strips refered to are not that bad, My workshop is so big I have these stuck to the celiling lighting the place up to cut down on the electric bill !
I have had them over a year and to date only 1 led out .

I also use a similar set I have several 12v ebay special Leds on a aluminium bar for cooling has it set up for nearly a year they get hot but non failed and I have it on for hours on end everyday normally 4-6 hours ?

The ones in Tv's fail because they don't use resistors to drop the current through the Leds so they take too much then pop.

No, the power supply limits the current (it is current regulated) so this isn't the reason. Such a fundamental error wouldn't slip through even with Vestel - the LEDs would last minutes doing that. The problem is they drive the LEDs too hard, and they wire them in series, so if one LED fails the whole lot goes. They need to use bypass ICs across each LED, that detect open circuit LEDs and fuse into a short circuit - there are devices made by ST Micro that do this:

Re: Toshiba 40L1333 Led Backlight Mod

vestel use constant current control to the led s , the voltage applied to the string is varied to suit the load condition and brightness of the LED s but the current is kept constant but sampling a portion of it through some resistors at the earthy end of the string and feeding back the sample to an error amp in the driver IC.
Toms theory that the LED s are over driven is prob right but here is some food for though, edge lit LED displays never seem to go wrong as often as back lit panels, and the big difference ? Edge lit LED s are mounted on a very substantial aluminium heatsink , back lit LED s are simply stuck on the back of a galvanized panel , High power led s need to be kept very cool or they have a short life.

Thanks for the info im still learning Also I have repaired quite of few edge lit sets but not nearly as many as these crap ass full array ones.

Cool but I normally now just tend to repair them myself, I will be uploading a youtube video of me repairing one of these in the week.
