    Westinghouse VR-2218

Hello, my Westinghouse tv recently went out on its own when I was watching tv and wouldn't turn on. The light on the bottom right corner would always be red when off green when on but in this case since the tv stopped working the light would be a weak stuttering green light barely visible and the tv started smelling really bad. I inspected the boards inside but couldn't see anything noticeably different. I will attach below an image and maybe you guys can see something and maybe I can replace a component to save my tv from the trash.

If you guys need more images or info etc let me know.

Looks like the small cap in the middle of the two transformers on top left of PSU board is bulged. May just be the angle of pic.

Looks like there is a legend by the connectors for voltage. Check for 5v DC when tv is plugged in but not turned on.

hello, thanks for the reply. are you referring the the cap that I will note belowin the images?
Would that cause the tv to start smelling really bad ? if I plug it in it wont turn on anyway and would smell really bad but how would I check for the 5v dc?

It was the angle. Although caps can be bad and not show signs.

If you attempt to turn it on with back removed can you pinpoint where the bad smell is coming from. Nothing looks to have been hot on PSU.

The only thing visible that looks like it got warm is the upper left screw on mainboard. But that may be just glue. Check all of the screws to make sure their tight.

I don't want to plug it in again but from the other times that I tested it it appeared the smell came from the power board

That cap is bulging though hard to see it.

Look closely and see if that capacitor is completely flat just to rule out the angles (Though to me that looks swollen)

If it is not flat replace.

As stated a Cap doesn't have to bulge to be bad as the ESR value can still go bad... If that is indeed swollen you can 100% say the ESR is bad which will cause a power issue leading to the bad 5v standby. I cannot say what the smell is though :/ Seems odd.

If you are wanting to repair the set then at times if its not a simple cap replacement we will need you to power it on.

                    Exactly.

I wish more people asking for help understands the need for clear focused pictures of their boards and not using "stock" pictures off the Internet and then saying that their board looks exactly like it. For those threads, I hit ctrl-w (close window).

Hard to tell from the lighting, but does Q1 & Q2 appear burned? They're located to the left and right of IC U1. If they look good, then check each for shorts.

I looked at q1 with a magnifying glass and theres a discoloration as if it burnt out, so I think that may be the problem and where the smell is coming from
