    Vizio VF550M Dropped Display Wanky

I've come across a nice VF550M that suffered impact trauma from falling off a wall mount.

Screen survived the drop and powers up OK..

But when a source is applied it looks like this initially:

After a few minutes of warmup, it degenerates to this:

I have a feeling that the display is bad.. But is it possible that it's one of the PCBs????

Visually inspected, all the boards look OK.. No broken boards, cracks or bad caps...

Any advice would be most appreciated..

I would say tab bonds bad. After warm up they probably get hot and loose their connection causing the lines.

you need to carefully dis-assemble and inspect the screen

What should I be looking for??

          Thanx for the reply....

I had a similar problem. I was working on a 40" Samsung panel (in a Sony TV) with tab bond issues. While assembling the case I chipped the edge of the glass. This caused a very similar image although the lines appeared all over the screen and not just from the top 1/4.

It probably did crack the panel but right on the edge so you cannot see it.

              OK Update on this...

              http://sjfm.us/temp/viziofm5504.jpg

After leaving it on for about 36 hours, the picture got a LOT better...

Still some liney fritzy stuff at the top, but a helluva improvement..

I have yet to disassemble the display. But even if the tab part is bad, is that replaceable??

Wouldn't I have to replace the entire display???

Thanx again for all the replies

Re: Vizio VF550M Dropped Display Wanky

Tab bonds are not replaceable, but you can sometimes apply a shim to a bond to get it in a good position to make proper contact.

Ahhhhh... I'll give that a shot...

Does the current symptom support the idea that the tabs are the problem??

                  Thanx

Re: Vizio VF550M Dropped Display Wanky

The current symptom suggests a small chip or crack the panel which may be flexible enough to allow intermittent operation ...

Re: Vizio VF550M Dropped Display Wanky

OK, I completely disassembled the Vizio display.. I inspected the tabs and where they connect. I didn't see any obvious breaks or burns or anything that might cause the wanky-ness...

I reassembled the unit, hooked it up to a Security Surveillance computer and got a decent picture with some minor glitching..

I am really close here and don't want to bail if it's a minor issue..

Thanx again for all the replies and assistance..

Left side flickering looks like tab bond, not sure about horizontal bars though.

Well, here's a little more information to gum up the works...

Within a few minutes of posting that, the flickering quit and it looked pretty decent..

Now, when I took that video, the TV was lying on it's side....

I shut the TV down and mounted it on a wall, horizontally like it should be normally and THIS is what it looks like now.. After about an hour of sitting..

I dunno what to make of all this except this thing is royally fraked..
