Samsung PN60E6500EF plasma has green and purple lines on the screen

Purplish and greenish vertical lines on my plasma tv. Samsung PN60E6500EF. The lines arent always there, they appear 1 to 5 hours after turning the tv on. They appear on different hdmi inputs as you can see in the pictures. they seem to change with the background colors but are pretty much usually the same color. And they kind of disappear with certain background colors, mainly black.

I have some pictures in this gallery

    Thank you.

Looks like a main board or control board issue.
This TV is 2013 model, right? No longer under warranty?

If you take the back cover off there is a quick test which can be done, it will tell you if the control board or main board is the fault. At least for a new TV like this, the parts should be cheaply and readily available.

Re: Samsung PN60E6500EF plasma has green and purple lines on the screen

I've had the tv for over a year, I think closer to 2 so I don't think it's under warranty anymore. But I am looking into that.
      <edit - i got it november 2012>

What is the quick test that can be done to find out what board it is? Is it something i can do or do I need special equipment?

I (quickly) searched the link in your signature. I didn't see anything for my specific tv so i just looked at one with a similar model number, just to see what it was. That particular one didn't seem to have what I needed.
Should I search more in that page for info or do i need to look somewhere else?

      thanks

The fast track guide for the Series 5 2012 panel should be OK.

Can you see the control/logic board? If you can't locate it, take a picture of the TV with the back case off and I will see if I can see it.

Re: Samsung PN60E6500EF plasma has green and purple lines on the screen

I might not be able to get to taking the tv down and getting the back panel off for a couple days.

This is the only TV I currently have so once I have it down I'm going to want to get parts ordered the same day. So i'm just going to ask a bunch of questions now so hopefully i know exactly what i'm doing when i get to this.

          1. I see that in the fast track guide it shows verifying "echo-p" and "logic" patterns. Should I be doing these kinds of tests? Echo-p seems to be for the main board and Logic for the logic. But you probably already knew that.

          2. Also in the fast track guide says "If the Menu also shows the defect the Main Board is suspected"? Does that mean if the error is "hidden" by the menu then the problem is probably not the Main Board?

          3. What will i be looking for when I get the back panel off? I see that the control board will likely be behind the stand. I assume the stand piece comes off. Then what?

          4. Since there isn't a fast track guide for my particular model, I used shopjimmy.com to look up the part numbers for my tv. Is that a safe way to look up part numbers or is there a better way.

thanks for taking the time to help me with this, I really appreciate it.

I'd suggest trying this. A fault appearing on logic would require a few more tests. If the fault disappears on logic, it indicates a main board problem.

I think they've got it backwards -- if the menu did NOT show the defect it would be certainly a main board fault. The reason is the main board is the only board which is capable of differentiating between the menu and video content. The control/logic board processes the whole display signal, menu included, so any error would also affect the menu system. However, it is also possible for the main board to affect both if the error occurs after it pieces the two items together (they are generated separately then superimposed), therefore further diagnosis is necessary in this case.

I am not 100% certain as I have not worked on this TV or a close model. However it will probably be under there. Once you locate the control/logic board try these tests... https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showpo...61&postcount=2

On yours the block is four equal sized copper plated holes, in a 2x2 grid. Jumper the holes marked 3 and 4. Unclip the cable going between the main board and logic board. Then power on the TV. The main board is the board which has the HDMI ports and other inputs on it.

Please be careful not to touch any part of the TV while running or plugged in with the exception of the backing metal of the plasma panel itself. There are high voltages in plasma TVs, in the region of 200V at several amps for the display panel sustain.

Use the part code printed on the board for a direct match. ShopJimmy has a video on Samsung part numbers that could help you.

              ok, one more question.

After I jumper 3 & 4, unclip the cable and then turn on the TV, then what? Will something come up on the screen that prompts me or am I looking for something specific?

thanks again, you're a real awesome dude

Once you turn the TV on (you might have to turn it on from standby or it may turn on automatically) after a few seconds it will alternate colour patterns on the display. Here's what you should see:
                http://youtu.be/JjrwTZC5nVg?t=3m24s

Note: Since your TV still turns on/off normally and only has a picture defect, it's not necessary to jumper PS-ON and GND as they indicate. If your TV did not power up then it would be necessary.

If you see the green/purple lines over the test patterns then you know the fault is the control board.

                  Update on how this went.

I didn't really follow the plan. I found a control board on eBay for $30 so I just bought that and switched it out. It fixed the problem, YAY! Some days it would be a couple hours between turning the TV on and when the lines would show up, so I didn't want to do the test and not see the lines and have it be a false negative just because I'm impatient.

Also, the picture seems to be better than ever, the colors seem brighter and picture seems more clear. Could be my imagination.

Thanks for your help Tom. Hope this thread helps someone else.
