    Samsung LE46M87 sometimes restarts?

    Hi everyone,

I know this is an old TV that many will probably think is not worth saving, but I love it and can't afford something new! It has developed a fault though that I can't seem to fix and would love for someone to help me.

First off, I am more than familiar with the bad caps virus these sets get, as I have had to replace them once before as the TV would not turn on.

This is a new and different fault though that I can't really find any information about. The TV turns on absolutely fine, however sometimes it will just restart itself. It started happening a few weeks ago, and tends to only be when watching the inbuilt freeview.

When this happens, it shows several different signs before hand. Sometimes the image and sound just freeze, and it will restart then work again. Sometimes the image starts to get a bit distorted with white pixels flying around, progressively gets worse for about 5 seconds, then it will restart and come back on fine. Other times the sound starts to deteriorate, then restart.

Every time it restarts, there is one relay click, the screen goes black, after about half a second the image flashes back on the screen and quickly fades to black, then another click while the red light flashes, then after about 4 seconds the TV is fully back on.

It tends to do this after about 10 minutes of being on from cold, it will do it 3-4 times within the next 10 minutes, then it will stay on fine the rest of the day, but it may do it once or twice again.

This has only happened 2 times when using PS3 on HDMI, but happens almost every time when watching the DTV.

Just incase my replacement caps went bad, I have replaced them again but this did not fix the problem.

I hope someone can help me!

    Many thanks,
    Graham

look for broken solder joints on the psu.
    specially anything large like transformers.

thank you, I could not see any bad solder joints on the PSU. I took a video of the TV doing its thing here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdvE...ature=youtu.be

you can see every time the channel freezes the menu is still functional with remote before it restarts, the first time it restarts in the video the channel doesn't actually come back on even though the TV is working

This TV uses a Bordeaux main board which is well known to have soldering issues under the main processor. A reflow may work, but would likely only be temporary.

Sounds like it may be the "bad solder virus".

More like the lead-free BGA soldering virus, which is still a problem to this date...

Thanks guys, well I think the CPU is under a huge soldered down cover which I do not think i will be able to remove, but I can put it in the oven for a few minutes and see if it helps.

I am more interested to narrow it down to just a PSU or main board fault, I can replace either one, but don't want to buy both!

99% main board because of how it freezes, IMHO. However you can try testing the PSU voltages when it fails to definitively rule out a power board fault.

                    Re: Samsung LE46M87 sometimes restarts?

okay thanks! I just thought the degraded sound/audio then freezing could be a result of a drop in input power, which then drops below a threshold to restart it. I don't have anything to test the PSU unfortunately. I will give the main board a good ovening tonight anyway and see what happens.

                    Thanks!

                      Re: Samsung LE46M87 sometimes restarts?

I put the motherboard in the oven at 270 for 5 minutes today and I have been watching the inbuilt freeview for just over an hour with no problems now! Like you said this is probably only a temporary solution, but it looks like the metal cover (which is also a heatsink) on the CPU is easier to remove than I first thought. If the problem happens again I think ill flush some flux under the CPU and give it a slightly more professional reflow with a heatgun, if this fails then it will be a new board from ebay! They are a lot more expensive that I thought though considering it is an old TV. It also looks like the same model number board can have a different tcon ribbon connector which is annoying.

                      Thanks for your help guys!

nearly a year since this thread was active, but i have the same problem with one le32m87 and 2 x le37m87 samsungs,
i also got down to main board being the problem on all 3 tv's,
and like has been said, they are rare boards to come across,
just wondered if you had to remove the shileding from the main board and do a good reflow, and how long did the tv work for after that ?
