    Samsung HP-R5052 problems

Got this TV for free today, off Craigslist, by someone who stated it needed a new "plasma bulb" (LOL)

Got it home and plugged it in and it works alright with a few quirks.

Mainly, pixels are slow to change from black to other colors (red and green mainly, they seem to change to white decently quickly)

I don't know the technical term or anything, so here is an amazing commissioned piece of artwork to describe the problem!

    http://i.imgur.com/73sF9XJ.png

The image to the left represents a black circle on the screen. The second image is what is supposed to be an all white screen, but some of the pixels remain black, as do some in the third screen, until finally a second or two later, the whole screen is white as in the third picture.

ONLY black pixels have this "Residual" or "ghosting" effect. Never had the problem with any other pixels.

Other than that there is a problem that when turning on, it takes a while for all the pixels to... start? Here is a video I took of that problem.

Now on the subject of repair, I'm handy with a soldering iron and have other things, but never a TV. I dont have a DMM but can nab one for a couple bucks at Harbor Frieght or something, though I might need a hand in knowing which cap to test, etc.
I'm happy to spend upwards of a hundred bucks on the set since it's in damn near perfect condition from the outside and the only problem is the black pixels slow refresh rate!

Looks like failed XMAIN. If it's the same as below, Shopjimmy has them cheap at $24. You could start checking all the vltages are present and correct, maybe check the fuses and also see if any of transistors, didoes and IPM modules have shorted. I think there was one not too long a go that just needed a fuse replaced but at $24, I would not bother trying board repair with IPMs.

It was this post but it has the next generation of panel and boards but ou may be lucky it's just a fuse otherwise I would replace the Xmain

At this price ($16 shipped) I am happy to jump on this today if you think there is even a 50% chance this would fix the problem. I've already got some credit in paypal from another transaction so this is a no-brainer to me if you think it will likely fix!!

Also one more thing to add, I noticed today that if on an all-white screen, there is a faint pinkish/reddish line that runs straight across the screen, right to left, in the exact middle of the screen. Doesn't bother me much but wondering if that might help solidify if X-main is the problem!

And one possibly stupid question, like I said I've never really worked on TVs : is it safe to those fuses by means of bridging the connection with a small piece of wire? While the TV is on? If yes then how do I go about - do I just turn the TV on, put on something that obviously shows the problem, then try bridging one and watching if it's happening?

Definitely DO NOT use wire to bridge the fuse or attempt doing it whilst powered up, yes that is stupid and dangerous.

98.4% feedback is not great and his standard reply for people reporting bad parts is Wrong Part, Working Part, Mis Diagnosed his TV

Is it really worth the $8 saving to take the risk.

You can upload photos going advanced, manage attachments and upload. More photos the better especially of the whit screen shot.

Generally dark splotches is dead XMAIN but there may be other issues like ymain and buffer boards too?

Post more images, so everyone can get a better idea.

It's only an opinion I'm giving, I would give the xmain a shot but I'd also be looking at how expensive and how hard it is to get Ymain and buffers too.

It's a pretty old TV, so if the xmain does not fix you could spend more than a working one is worth.

Here's one that never got fixed. Started as a blown PSU.

looking at this one, could be xmain, ymain and buffers.

Checking the voltages at the boards maybe handy too , could even be bad power to the X from the SUB power board??

A lot of boards in that one.

Tried replacing X-MAIN and still having problem. Something strange I noticed is that there are two unused power-ports, circled in PINK attached image. Not sure if they are supposed to be connected to something, I can't find a definitive answer... While TV was open I looked at all caps, none looks bulged and all fuses looked intact. Tried to take a picture or two but they were blurry because of bad lighting
