Magnavox 42MF231D/37 will not completely power off, dim "backlight"

First off, thanks to the badcaps.net community, I would be lost and bored without you.

I just fixed a Y-buffer on this set. Everything seems normal except when I turn it off - by remote or tv's power button - it still has a very dim "backlight". I've read the service manual and searched around this forum and the web but haven't found this particular problem. Of coarse unplugging it solves the problem but I'm hoping for a more convenient solution. Anyone ever seen this issue before or know what might be causing this type of behavior?

Does this model have a digital TV tuner? Does it work properly? (DTV tuner can sometimes cause this issue.)

Yes this tv does. Worked on many of these sets and for some reason this happens to some. Its a firmware issue. Update if possible thru usb.
Did I leave the soldering iron on?

According to the service manual it has NTSC & ATSC. Digital STB is an option in the menu & under OSD Operation in the SM it says:
        Channel turning
        Available channels:
        - Cable (analog NTSC or digital QAM)
        - Terrestrial (analog NTSC or digital ATSC)

I don't really know. It accepts a signal from the cable box

Re: Magnavox 42MF231D/37 will not completely power off, dim "backlight"

Thanks freakaftr8 for confirming and tom66 for bringing it up. In the menu/settings I set all the inputs -except the HDMI- to "NONE" and it turned off after about 10 minutes of standby mode.

I downloaded 42mf231d_37_fus_eng.zip firmware and extracted it to a Fat32 usb drive using Linux but the TV didn't find the file in automatic update mode (turn TV on w/usb inserted) or in manual mode via the menu/settings. The Read Me says the usb format should be FAT/DOS so I think I just need to find another usb drive that doesn't have 10 LiveOSs on it as I'm too lazy to reinstall them.

Edit: 3.5 hours later it turned itself back on

After discovering there is no option on Linux with GPartEd or TestDisk to format partitions to FAT (only FAT12, FAT16, FAT32) I fired up a Windows box > opened Command Prompt > typed format e: /fs:FAT > copied Autorun.upg (downloaded from http://www.m4c.magnavox.com/cgi-bin/...scy=US&slg=ENG) to the USB drive> tried to install the firmware update and still it wouldn't find the update on the USB drive...not sure what I did wrong.

On a positive note, the TV only turned itself back on only once (mentioned in the edit above) and regularly powers off completely whether using the remote or the onboard power button.

Though perplexed I am happy it has no issues now. Thanks & Cheers

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?
              by Tynan Dill
I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

              Assuming...

Microsoft Surface Pro (5th gen) model 1796 - no power
              by PantherDave
              Hi all!

I'm trying to troubleshoot a Microsoft Surface Pro (5th gen) model 1796 that won't power on. Motherboard model is M1007506-015. My priority is retrieving data, but the SSD is integrated so it looks like if I can't repair it it'll need to go to a data recovery company. I've done a little basic board repair before, but nothing this advanced until now. So please forgive my ignorance in advance. 😅

I found the boardview for this laptop in the forums here, and am able to open it on my PC with FlexBV.

              XBR-65X850D Backlight/Power On Help
              by BoardHoarder
Currently trying to save a 65” 850D that definitely has a main board issue. Power supply has standby voltage and PS ON pin shows 3.5VDC but main has no signs of life…..no light under Sony logo and no optical port lit up. 12VDC is created by main board but no input triggers from main = no TCON 12V and no BL ON voltage present. I know about the trick of pulling the main to trigger the test pattern from the TCON but I get no backlight. If I jumper the 3.5VDC to TCON ON and BL ON, I can shine a light on the panel and see solid green, red, blue and white cycling. The 4 + backlight pins on the power...

              by GLISIT
              Hi all,

TL;DR - this laptop is driving me nuts with the oddball power-related behaviors. Appreciate any insight you can provide!

I'm experiencing a power issue on an Asus Probook P5440UF-XB74. Although I've worked with electronics and computers for decades, this is my first attempt at getting into motherboard-level component troubleshooting. Any help the community can provide is greatly appreciated!

A few weeks ago I was using the laptop (on battery power) for a Zoom meeting. The battery was running very low (long meeting) but I wasn't worried about...

              TV LG39LN575S, no backlight power, EAX64905301(2.2), MAP3202
              by hikomalek
              Hello,
I would be really grateful for your suggestion how to repair a no backlight power on TV LG39LN575S. There is a visible menu on a screen when I use external torch (so logic board and panel works correctly), there is just no backlight.

I have connected a logic board which is turning on power board and disconnected LED backlight cable.

              Power board:
              REV2.0 2013.03.28
              PCB: EAX64905301(2.2)
              LGIT PCB P/N: 3PCR00184A

              IC LED driver MAP3202

              MAP3202 voltages:
              (1) EN = 2.75V
              (2) VCC = 12.05V
              (3) GATE = 0 V...
