I have never used a Rigol PSU, and the bad design of the voltage regulator has nothing to do with the 4 year old DS1000E design (agreeably, Rigol quality appears to have fallen, as they've moved from Nichicon to Capxon on SMPS for example.) Besides, I am NOT promoting it! It's a good scope, but it's showing it's age. Nowadays, someone would be better getting a DS1000Z or DS2000, or perhaps one from another manufacturer, though I've not tested any others but high end Agilent -- well beyond a hobbyist's budget.

Input noise DOESN'T MATTER to a guy trying to repair a bloody CRT! Jeez, you act as if everyone needs the best scope in the world or they might as well not bother.
I am not acting mate, few years later that you will probably manage to advance in life, your bench will not have toys as tools.
    Mark my word.

You seem to collect your instruments on specification rather than actual usability, functionality or performance vs price.

Now you have played and you lost, you are the inexperienced student and I am an professional 43 years old that you do not have a clue about my complete background of experiences.

But in order to make you feel some how better, I will say that just in the latest tools we have a common link so to talk about them, because they are new to every one.

I'm not sure what you mean. We're in different areas entirely. I'm doing an engineering degree, and would call myself an engineer, as I design electronic systems; repairing stuff isn't part of the subject. I repair stuff, but purely as a hobby. You're a technician. You repair stuff as a job. And age is irrelevant.

Hmm. Don't you think it's egoist to argue about someone else's ego in that way? And completely irrelevant.

I personally think age is irrelevant. I worked at a data entry company when I was younger and I taught some of the older workers a lot of new stuff. They also taught me. When I was in the Corps, I saw some violence and I've seen a lot of violence on the streets. Can we try to get along? I really appreciate all of the help you guys have provided and it bothers me when I see you guys fighting.

We are not fighting, teasing its other? Yes

Basically I have suffer much in order to climb in the stairway of hierarchy, which leads you gaining a wider recognition and self esteem as worker in a group.
Lesson learned well: Any one who ignore this stairway, his fate is to crash his face on a wall as soon he graduates and walk in, in a totally unfriendly business environment.

Yes my soul is hard but sincere and reasonable, and I like to help people which seems to have some potentials to fight and win.

As about you Spork, you were lucky about finding a friendly business environment in your start up, the most usual condition is your own coworkers to wish you to fail so to be fired and bring in your position some one of their own friends or family.

Any way, now its time to get your self a better scope, and possibly a differential 100X probe so to avoid the most biggest problem that is live phase to be connected accidentally with the alligator clip of your scope.
Alternatively you will need an isolation transformer.
Yes using an Oscilloscope safely is not a cheap sport.

That is good advice, applicable to every scope.

I have tried for the past few days, unsuccessfully, to get the cap on the 555 timer to discharge through Ra and Rb. What's the secret? I saw on one of Budm's links that to achieve 50% duty cycle, all that is needed is a diode between pin 7 and 6. If that's the answer, I do not understand why that works...What's the answer Tom66?

The capacitor is supposed to charge with current drawn from the supply rail through Ra and Rb in series.
When pin 6 senses that the capacitor voltage has reached 2/3 of rail voltage, pin 3 goes low and the internal transistor gets turned on, pulling pin 7 to ground.
The capacitor discharges to ground through Rb via the transistor.
When pin 2 senses that the capacitor voltage has reached 1/3 of rail voltage, pin 3 goes high and the transistor turns off allowing the capacitor to charge through Ra and Rb again.
What do you see happening on the capacitor?

Try to not damage the 555 IC. Connecting pin 7 directly to the supply rail or connecting pin 3 directly to ground or supply rail will likely damage it.
The CMOS version would be more forgiving.
Check that both pin 8 and 4 are connected to the supply rail.
