HPN 5039 Samsung Plasma. Dark picture with pink snowy fuzz. Pics included

Hey guys so I have a 50" plasma (samsung hpn 5039).

It's been giving me hell for the last month or so. It turns on fine. Has no problem staying on but the picture is horrible.

It's dark, fuzzy/grainy and has what appears to be pink snow that takes up most of the top left portion of the screen.

I've replaced some of the caps that were bad but that didn't seem to change anything. I suspect that there are more bad caps so I plan to head to local parts store and grab some. I will include pictures.

Found voltage sticker. tested all voltages. They are as follows

    V5d: sticker rated-5.3 actual- 5.3
    VG: Sticker-15- actual - 15.3
    VSCAN: Sticker-95 Actual- 110
    VS: Sticker-82 Actual- 101
    VSET: Sticker-125 Actual 144
    VE: Sticker- 115 Actual 129
    VA: sticker-76 Actual 87

    Seems that they're all high.

I've noticed a few of the largest caps on the PS are bulged. But not bulged in the middle. They are bulged on all four sides of the x. The dead center of the caps is still fine. Not sure if that helps @ all.

    X-main fault.
I'd suggest replacing your multimeter battery.
Also, Vs should not be 110V, it should be closer to 200V.

      Thanks for the info.

What makes you think it's an X main fault? Also why do you suggest I replace multimeter battery? It's fairly new. Just curious. Thanks

A low multimeter battery can cause universally high readings, which you are seeing. Even leaving the multimeter on for just a day can drain the battery, and the low battery indicator doesn't always work.

The display is showing poor diffusion, a characteristic of X-main failure. If you had no picture at all it might be a Y-main or X-main fault (then isolate X-main power: no picture: Y-main, picture distorted: X-main.)

I gotcha thanks for the tips on the DMM.

So now sadly the question becomes which board is the X main? Will post pics.

I've been told that the X is the one on the far middle right side of the picture.

But when I unplug this board from the PS it still has the pink snowy image.

          Thanks

Yes, the rightmost large board is the X-main.

It supplies drive waveforms to the common electrode. If the waveforms are missing or poor, the distortion you see is shown. Naturally unplugging it will show the same effect too.

Panasonic P42S30 Plasma - Pink sparkles
              by Lintesir
My parents' Panasonic P42S30 died recently, and they asked me to have a look at it. I was able to identify the SN-board as the culprit, as it was shorted. After removing Q401, Q402, Q421 and Q422 the short was gone, so I replaced these components and that got the TV working again. However, when testing the tv a bit, I noticed quite bad pinkish sparkles on some colors. For instance the greyish bar on this forum seems to trigger it quite badly. I made a fullscreen test picture with only that color, with the below result.

There is about a 5cm high region at the top without any sparkles,...

Asus VX238H - pink area over picture
              by YellowJacket
              Hi friends,

I got this monitor, which works perfectly fine, except there is pink discoloration over right side of the screen ( picture1 ). When I disconnect LVDS cable, there is no sign of pink color, so its not backlight issue ( picture2 ). I took a closer picture of the upper right corner, you can see even some kind of pixel defects. Its only on that pink area ( picture3 ).
I believe, there is some problem inside the panel, the question is, if it is fixable. I have never met this kind of issue, so I really appreciate little help from you guys. What I tried so far - interrupt...

              LCD TV Green/Pink screen problem
              by jimjoe123
I have a Dick Smith 37" LCD TV, Model GE6804. I am using it as PC extended monitor only.

Problem is while watching tv, I hear a semi loud click(like a electrical breaker tripping due to overload, just sound like it but no actual electrical overload), then screen is covered with green or pink. I can still see the original picture image but overlayed by green or pink. See attached images. Pink.jpg is what I see, and Normal.jpg is before green or pink screen, What I captured was pink screen, but about 80% of time it's green and 20% of time it's pink.

              Then each time...

              Hello,
I am having Samsung PS51E550 Plasma TV. While the TV was working, a crackling sound heard & video went off with audio still ON. After switching it off & ON, the red LED on TV blinks six times & then off.
Opened TV cover & observed foll
              a) Green LED on the small PCB blinks at @5-6sec ON & off for 3-4 secs. Red LED on logic board ON
b)Vs & Va on power supply board raises momentarily to 209v & 58v resp & then drops.
              c) Cold test on Y-main board shows all 3 pins of FGPF4536 IGBT short to Grnd.
