Sony Bravia KDL 52W5150 display problem

The display on my 2009 Sony Bravia KDL 52W5150 has recently started showing signs of screen anomalies. I know there has been a recall for the 52Z5100 and XBR line, but I contacted Sony and told me there was nothing they can do. I have read several other posts, and I'm wondering if it is a T-CON issue, but not sure. My symptoms are that the top 1/4 of screen is fine, but the bottom portion is shaded darker. Attached is a picture of screen. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

From my experience, most of Sony's problems are panel problems and cannot be fixed. I hope yours isn't one of them. If you can find a t-con board, it wouldnt hurt to try. It's one of the easiest parts to change on thes sets, and cheapest.

This looks like tab bonds to me. It's fixable but tricky.

Re: Sony Bravia KDL 52W5150 display problem

Thanks for the tips. I am not sure if it is tab bonds for sure. I did another test recommended from another forum post which said to try and squeeze the bezel edge near the screen after set has warmed up. This did not have any affect on problem. I would not even know where to begin to try and fix the problem if it was tab bonds.

The t-con board I would be willing to try if I could locate one.

Really disappointed with Sony on this, a tv should not be disposable after 3 years...

Try grabbing the TV by the corners and try twisting it.
Try resetting the TV, it can't hurt.

Looks like I'll be in the market for a new tv, and then I can try to take apart this unit and attempt to fix it. I know I will not be getting a Sony, based on poor customer service. Does anyone know if all manufacturers are using this tab bond construction technique? It seems this is problematic across several manufacturers, and I'd like to avoid if possible. Will take any good recommendations in a 55" LED.

All newer LCDs suffer from this, and they still suffer from it. Not a Samsung; too many faults. Sony use Samsung panels though they've recently switched to using other panels.

Panasonic are good, but their plasmas are second-to-none and will beat an LED TV for overall picture quality. And they're cheaper. Unless you need a non-glossy screen or are watching the TV in a very brightly lit room I'd suggest a plasma any day.

Yes, you have a bad LCD Screen. There's a good test. Contort/flex the top right/left corners of the screen ever so slightly. If there is any change in the pix, you have a bad LCD panel.

I would agree with Tom66. My TV is a plasma and when people ask me why, I say it's because I believe the picture quality is much better than LED/LCD. But I appreciate it's only my personal opinion.
