It is an error code because the main board is detecting the T-con is not connected properly.

Thanks tom66, not sure how good I would be at replacing components on the main board. Don't mind replacing parts probably like most as that's pretty straight forward. Is the hair dryer trick the only other possible test? If a part over heats on the board does it automatically shut down?

I may have neglected to mention that this problem first occurred probably after an hours use of TV and then the time to problem shortened to now about 5 minutes.

Yes, this is an important point, because it indicates to me:
- it's not firmware or software crashing (that wouldn't get slowly worse)
- it's not a problem with e.g. certain picture brightness or sound level
- it's thermally sensitive (things warm up they are under more strain, so near the end of their life they can run for less time)

As components get hot they don't necessarily shut down, but they do malfunction. When they malfunction the problem occurs. Locating the fault on the main board or possibly the t-con is best done by applying gentle heat.

Start around the main processors (large chips, sometimes under heatsinks.)
If you post a picture of the main board, I can highlight possible trouble spots.

Of course board will stop after ~10mins, you're just looking to make it stop after 30~60 seconds by heating a particular part, to locate the fault.

Start with the "X-Reality" processor.
Interesting they bother to brand it inside the TV... it's just an ordinary image scaler, nothing special...

Lead-free solder BGA failure. Easy enough to fix, but keeps happening with new electronics. You can't remove lead from electronics & hope that solder will still work, unfortunately. That processor probably runs far too hot and needs a heatsink, cracking the brittle lead-free solder.

Also happens with Samsung main boards.

Try it again a few times, plus do a control run and see if it lasts longer with no heat.

1)No heat for one minute, heat for further minute then it lasted until 6 minutes.

2)Medium heat from start on x reality chip, 18 seconds.

Either no picture on start up now or lasts a few seconds so think need to give it a few mins.

What I have just noticed is a fizzing noise coming from the attached picture. That's the board from where the power comes into. Is this normal? It's from the part with yellow label, 90-329.

Such a component can make such a sound when it is operating at a low power level (i.e. in standby.)

Medium heat, 1 min 34. Will try again with no heat when can next switch back on.

Is the part number of the board Y2009460A 035741 Rev 101 Soft 3121?

You can try reflowing the board. Essentially baking it in the oven. Worth a shot, if you are just going to replace the board.

You will need some no-clean flux and an available gas or electric oven, capable of being set to 220~230°C.

Flux should be liberally spread around the suspect processor area and nearby memory devices (black chips connected to X-Reality chip via the traces on the board.)

Board should be placed in oven warmed to 100°C, then oven should be set to 230°C. Gas oven preferred due to faster warm up but electric can still work, but use a 150°C starting temperature if your oven does not warm up quickly. 2.5 minutes maximum -- do not overdo it. The flux may smoke; this is not abnormal.

Turn off the oven and remove board from the oven. Allow the board to cool down slowly until you can comfortably hold it.

Reinstall it and then test it whilst cool to see if 10 minute problem is still there.

This fix is sometimes only temporary but can easily give a few years' extra life to a TV.

Cheers tom66, tried turning on again a few times in the last half hour but won't come on now so couldn't test again with no heat.

You have made that method sound easy, almost thinking of giving it a go It's got to be worth a gamble.

Would you know where to buy this particular board from as not sure exactly the right one.

Silly question, will it be on the board? I've had a look but couldn't see anything obvious. Will have a look for something like what you said tomorrow. Thanks for the assistance tonight.

I don't know for sure. I've only ever had my hands on one Sony to repair (overall they've got good reliability, but I hate Sony's evil practices elsewhere, but that's a story for another day.) Unfortunately that ended in disaster, chipped the edge of the screen, ruined it!! But I learnt my lesson.

Sorry to hear about the screen Looks like you have fixed/ saved more than you have lost!

I have just turned the tv on and it took 2mins 30 seconds for the screen to disappear. The tv hadnt been on since last night so was completely cold. Still main board do you think?
