SONY AVD K800P receiver plays CD's Not DVD

I have a Sony AVD K800P CD/DVD receiver/player that will play CD's (after reading for extended period) but will not play DVD, costs $14 at community Thrift store so no big deal, but would like to get the DVD to play. I've tried the CD "cleaning disk" that seem to make no diference at all , have not opened it yet, it's semi-permentelt mounted under a shelf (I know ....I should have completely tested before installing) I've seen online references to laser power adjustments that seemd to fix for others with similar problems. Anyone seen this before and got it fixed?

Open it up and clean the lens directly with a soft paper cloth.

Had the same problem with a DVD player. (Played CDs fine but with a DVD would show "Loading" for about a minute then "No Disc".)

"Lens cleaning" CDs and DVDs don't seem to work for me. Didn't work on the DVD player, but after cleaning the lens directly it worked.

If cleaning the lens is unsuccessful you could always try giving the laser assembly a bath in isopropanol alcohol. Fill a jar up with enough to cover it and agitate it for a while.

Failing that, as a last resort, you could look on the laser assembly for a couple of pots, grab your multimeter, set it to 20K ohms, check them both, mark it down, then adjust them individually counter clockwise (reading descending) increasing the voltage in small increments testing a DVD after each increment till hopefully it reads. If it does, hopefully in the process you will have worked out which is for CDs and which is for DVDs and you can set the other back to it's original reading. If you go to low you will kill the laser though. I did say it was a last resort...

      Had a look around for a replacement laser for this. I think it's a DBU-1 A-4713-410A.

Found one on the fleabay although you would need to confirm it is the same part.

Thank you tom66/py3m4n- I will try the cleaning first and the pot adjust as /if required, Yes I think I tracked the assembly to a DBU-1 about a week ago, could't recall the PN# thanks, but right now it's back to the 5 volt problem with I-INC IF281D monitor (separate thread - main TV in the house, oh the pressure!!)

          Sony Receiver STR-4800SD L/R Balance
          by sretchko
Hey fellow solder fume lovers, I have a Vintage Sony Receiver STR-4800 SD that has me stumped.
The Balance Pot has to be set at about 30 degrees (11 o'clock) to the left for the output to be balanced (see photo). I'm using an oscope, sig gen 1kHz sine, 8 ohm dummy load).

When output is balanced (11 o'clock left) both channels clip at about 19 vac / 45 watts RMS, Amp is rated at 35 watts so I know the amp modules are good. Square wave also looks good when turning bass & treble pots and is in phase.

I pulled the balance pot, (Dual 10K MN Taper) cleaned with...

Sony str-dn850 home receiver no left channel.
          by erickeri1234
Ok start off by saying I have some tv repair but not much on the receiver end.
Picked up a Sony str-dn850 home receiver when I first plugged it in powered it up it came on and the system check relay clicked and about 3 seconds later it went into protection mode.
I powered it off and on. Comes on no problem.
Hooked up speakers and it started to pop and crackle but the volume was all the way down.. and I was only getting that sound out of the left channel. Right channel had no sound.. but every time I turn the volume up it has a smell crackling sound on ever volume number......

          Sony KDL-46HX850 Can't upgrade/update firmware
          by dkneyle
Diagnosed this TV as having a failed main board which I've replaced with one from a KDL 55HX850. They are (supposedly) the same board.

Being 'Smart TV' it requires a firmware reboot when you swap out boards such as T-Con or main board. It starts with a black screen and flashing yellow and green LEDS, indicating it needs that firmware boot. The procedure described all over the web is to put the software into the root directory of a FAT32 formatted USB drive and it should load that up once plugged into USB1 port. But not for me. I can see the LED on the USB chip flash for about...
