    Toshiba 26C100U - no power

Seemed to have made a name for myself. Another TV was pulled from the dumpster and brought by. Symptoms were NO POWER. Opened up the back and plugged it in to the variable transformer. Slowly cranked up the voltage and watched the current jump. I looked for shorts at the bridge and then looked upstream towards the AC plug. Found that the TVS101 ( part number P6KE220CA) was dead short. Pulled it and fired up the set. Works. I have ordered a replacement TVS, but am wondering if there is anything else that I can put in its place as a substitute. Perhaps an MOV?

You can only use a MOV in certain circumstances:
    - it is safety rated (won't catch fire easily... most are but not all!)
    - the fuse can interrupt the failure current and voltage

A TVS device is cheap, try something like this: http://uk.farnell.com/multicomp/p6ke...00w/dp/1578845

Good idea on using the variac. I'm looking out for a TV with a short on the power supply to debug using that as I've got a variac too but not used it for any repairs yet. I suppose you used a clamp ammeter for the current?

Oh and are you using an automotive fuse in place of a mains fuse? Bad idea. An auto fuse can only interrupt around 32V, and will not interrupt a mains short.

Suprisingly, the fuse was not blown. The variable transformer I have (Tenma 72-1097) has a current meter on it. Very nice box and if you have the $$$, I recommend it.

Thanks for the helpful advice on the TVS. I have ordered a replacement ($0.77) from Digikey.

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?
          by Tynan Dill
I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

          Assuming...

Desoldering gun station modified to use a 18 volt @ 20 amp switching power supply
          by sam_sam_sam
I have wanting to do this project for quite sometime now and I finally found a switching power supply that will work on this desoldering gun station ZD-915 that the original switching power supply took a shit and just was not worth trying to fix it because this switching power is not quite big enough to handle the heater element and the vacuum pump

One note when I tested the switching power supply and the voltage control board I noticed that this desoldering gun heat up much faster than the original switching power supply which I was really surprised by to the point that I might buy...

Toshiba Satellite C50-A won't power down
          by ju123
          Hi guys,

So, I've been racking my brains on this one.

          I have a Satellite C50-A which I'm repairing for a friend.

I recently replaced the main board due to failure.

Following this, absolutely everything works perfectly, except for the fact it won't power down.

Initially, shutting down via Windows would shut the OS down, screen would turn off (noticed the lighter black go to what looks like the darker black powered off screen as though the backlights have powered off), however the laptop was still running internally with a spinning...

Toshiba L50-B-1Q0 (Main DABLIDMB8E0 REV:E) no power on
          by robgerr
Good morning forum. This laptop comes into my laboratory with the defect that it won't turn on. By connecting the bench power supply I have an absorption of 1.56A (battery charging), I disconnect the battery, I have an absorption of 0.01A. I give the power on but it doesn't react. I check the mainboard and I notice the Isl88732 charger with oxide and a little burnt between pins 7-8. I remove the charger, clean the pads and solder another ISL coming from another identical board. I also find a bit of oxide in the power button connector. I clean the connector, clean the flat that goes to the power...
